Oh My Ghostess FINALE (ep16): OH MY GHOST - WHAT A DRAMA!

Dear Kdrama gods, I thank you for the wonderful gift that was this drama. As it comes to an end, I feel a mix of emotions from elation to despair. Such a beautiful ending but I'm so sad to see it go. I laughed, I cried, I had butterflies dancing a jig. It was pretty much as near perfect as a drama, and drama ending, can get.

Hyde, Jekyll and I ep 16: Of Boards and Turtlenecks

So, I don't know if you know this or not, but this recap is really, really extra super duper late. The next episode is already out. I just couldn't figure out what to say about this one. Why? Because NOTHING happened. No, really, nothing happened. So, since we don't have a lot to cover plot-wise, I thought I'd start with the most memorable moment of the entire episode and then just go from there.

Pinocchio Episode 16 - Back Where We Belong

I had a lot of conflicting emotions with this episode.  First there was giddiness, mostly because Dal Po in love is one of the cutest things ever, followed by crankiness, acceptance, and then enjoyment.  I wonder if there is an official stages list for Pinocchio episodes?  It feels like things are starting to wind down and then I realized........ WE ARE ALMOST DONE! 

I don't know why I was thinking we had a lot of story left to watch, but we don't.  Next week is the last week (3 episodes will be aired to make up for the one missed for the award show) and then it is all over.  Now i am kind of sad since I have grown to expect my weekly Dal Po/In Ha fix.  But we are not finished yet so lets jump into my seven favorite moments of episode 16

My Secret Hotel episode 16: Well, It's Over

Upon finishing this week's two finale episodes, my initial thought was relief. Relief that I got to cover 16 and not 15. If I had had to take on 15, well, I just don't know what I would have done. Ten minutes in, I was texting Kmuse and screaming at the insanity of it all. I was frustrated. With a capital F. As in, "what the F...(Foghorn Leghorn - he sure was frustrating)"??  I had to stop watching it and wait for Kmuse's recap first before I could continue. I had wished I could do the same for 16 too, but, obviously that wasn't going to work. I guess I'm the "skip to the end of the book" kind of person. I am. There's no use denying it. I don't like spoilers, but there are times when they are necessary in order for me to continue on and/or save my sanity.

The Joseon Gunman Episodes 15 & 16 - Rioting and Regrets

Episode 15

I remember hearing somewhere that when people attempt suicide by jumping off bridges, it is not necessarily the drowning that kills you, but the impact on the water from such a high starting point.  In other words, the water impact is the same as hitting cement and then after the initial impact the body sinks into the water and you drown if you are already not dead.  Obviously this does not matter from the Korean cliff of death, where everyone (seriously I do mean everyone) somehow manages to survive regardless of previous injuries (such as gun or knife wounds), blood loss, or lack of swimming skills.  I am pretty sure that no one EVER dies from this cliff face.  You can add one more survivor to that list as Merchant Choi manages to escape deaths grasp by wearing a historic bullet proof vest, protecting his heart from the final gunshot fired by Yoon Kang.  Of course we will just ignore the other two bullet wounds, the blood loss, and the massive fall since they don't really count.  On one hand, YAY!  Merchant Choi is alive and has a chance for redemption or mayhem (fine with either).  But on the other, boo for the writers not jumping outside of the box and surprising us with a mid drama character death.  Sometimes I would really welcome the surprise. 

The slap of finality has occurred and Hye Won and Soo In's friendship is officially over.  This is no surprise to me the viewer. I think we saw the writing on the wall back when Hye Won oh so subtly told Soo In to back off her guy, although I am pretty sure that Soo In did not notice the warning signs.  So it comes as a huge shock when she gets slapped for not knowing/admitting where her boyfriend is when confronted by a distraught Hye Won.  What did she expect?  Tea and crumpets with her friend who's father just got murdered by her boyfriend due to revenge over the father killing boyfriends father?   Oh and let's not forget the attempted murder of Soo In's own father by said father Choi.  Let's just call this friendship DOA and move on with the fallout from the cliff.

Yoon Kang is starting to feel some regret over his murdering Merchant Choi moment.  Not sure if it was for the actual murder itself, or more for the need for the murder.  Either way the writers are starting to give us a less hot headed lead as he goes forth with a less shoot first and think later revenge plan for the Creepy Political Ahjussi.  He pretends to be Yamoto and goes to Creepy Ahjussi's house to get some recon on both the layout of his home as well as trying to see into CA's psyche.  I personally think that this scene was put in so the stylists could yet again give Lee Joon Gi another makeover (he even looks good in a pervestache.) Or the director wanted to bring back the terminator vibe as Merchant Choi goes all crazy eyed and wakes from his "coma" when he hears Yoon Kang's voice.  Either way, all the evil players in our political board game have finally met Yoon Kang so that is progress right?

Oh Vanilla Boy why are you just so, well, vanilla.  Even being put in charge of the cities militia does nothing for your sexy romantic lead level.  You are just the vanilla wafer of the combo pack, perfectly adequate, yet always picked last.  I did have one surprise regarding his storyline.  When Soo In found out who his father was she was actually pissed off and treated him poorly.  REALLY?  You are willing to be Besties Forever with Hye Won whose father is a known murderer (and attempted to kill your father), but you condemn Vanilla his parentage when all he has done is actually support you and your father, even when it puts him at odds from his own?  Lets work on our character consistency Soo In.

Soo In continues to be a burden when it comes to Yoon Kang's safety.  It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you want to find Yoon Kang then just follow an oblivious Soo In to his "secret" hideout.   This is exactly how Hye Won finds him........twice...........unfortunately just as I was starting to think that Hye Won is the perfectly developed character, the writers start to write her as a Bond Villain.  You know the kind, the one's that spend more time telling you they are going to kill you, then actually killing you.  I don't know if it is the extension curse coming into play or just the writers have run out of plot and need to drag things out, but two scenes with Hye Won staring crazy eyed and telling Yoon Kang why he needs to die was overkill.

Episode 16

I am sure that it will not come as a surprise that no one dies after episode 15's cliffhanger.  Lots of posturing, threats, and tears ensued ended in a stalemate, as Yoon Kang and Soo In escape after disarming the gun toting duo.  Although I would like to point out that if you are going to disarm your opponent, then don't leave the guns on the ground for them to recover. Smart villains would have picked up those guns quickly and shot the couple in the back.  However no one is accusing the 2nd in command gunman of being smart.  How many times has he been between by Yoon Kang so far?  At some point you would think he would be smart and take a step back when pointing a gun at our hero.

In despair over her failure in the revenge department, Hye Won raises her derringer (that she recovered from the ground where it had been thrown) and attempts to kill herself...........again......... this girl really is wanting to die over any failure. At the last moment her father, who of course is alive, stops her hand and tells her that even if he had died she must go on and be strong.  YAY the Choi's are reunited and are also united in their hatred of Yoon Kang.  Hye Won was just not pulling her weight as the big bad without the support of her father.

We finally begin to focus on the political aspects of the drama.  I am so happy since I feel that we have been going in circles for a while now.  The conservative faction lead by Creepy Political Ahjussi come together in a historical version of a frat initiation ceremony.  Their plan?  To displace the king and kill off the Queen and her family who were sprinkled strategically throughout the government.  An ambitious plan that actually is overshadowed by their need to put it in writing, not only in writing, but in a cute visually stunning way that is oh so fancy.  I was amused and thought it ended up looking kind of like a flower.  Hiding in the shadows, lurks Yoon Kang in his gunman garb (how did he get in there without anyone noticing?) and as soon as everyone leaves he confronts Creepy Ahjussi and steels the damning document.  

Yoon Kang quickly races it to the king, but it is too late as the conservatives start their rioting ahead of schedule and start butchering all the progressive leaders and queens family members.  Luckily the queen is smuggled outside of the palace thanks to the quick thinking of Yoon Kang and Soo In.  At least someone noticed the stupidity of escaping in a slow moving carrier, although escaping with a massive entourage in tow is still really dumb.  And could you have not thought of somewhere safer than a known relatives house?  Pick a random shack, is it more important to be comfortable or alive?

So here we stand.  Bad guys trying to kill the queen, Yoon Kang trying to use justice to imprison Creepy Political Ahjussi, Soo In and Vanilla boy being kind of pointlessly thrown into the action.  What will happen?  Will Vanilla lead become interesting?  Will Yoon Kang receive justice?  Will the plot start moving faster (luckily I have it on good authority that the next several episodes are exciting, so I have high hopes)? King of High School Episode 16 - Cute Filler and Complications

Hey loyal readers, this is going to be a very brief post since I am currently packing and getting all my last minute errands done for my flight to KCON!  At 4am tomorrow morning I will be at the airport and making my way to LA!  So since I am quickly running out of time, this is going to be more of just a few thoughts that have been rambling through my brain after watching the episode rather than a traditional, or even mini recap.  On an up note, at least this is a great episode for this to happen since I was getting filler episode vibes as I watched.  Not that it was bad filler since the characters are all so enjoyable to watch, but filler none the less.

I think my biggest problem with the episode is that they really beat the concept, that their relationship is not going to work right now, into the ground.  Yes I know Min Seok and Soo Young have a huge age gap to deal with and yes there are going to be problems that arise with overcoming that specific issue.  But it felt like the saved all of the "problems" and smashed them all into one hour rather than spreading them out a bit.  I have a feeling that despite the preview we saw for next week, there is going to be a time jump on the horizon.  I understand why they do the time jump (mostly to make the whole underage aspect feel less scuzzy) but for once I wish the writers would just let a couple grow together and not make them separate to make them more presentable.  Let them  figure out how to deal with the trials they have and not expect everything to work out in the future just because you are suddenly at a presentable age.  Life is not like that, and going through the trials of relationships together is how a couple really becomes stronger.  There is a reason why people say long distance relationships are doomed, because they rarely work out despite how Kdramas portray them.

My favorite moment of the episode was the chicken and beer scene between Jin Woo and Min Seok.  There was something just so cute with the two of them relaxing and having a bit of a bromance.  I really wish that Jin Woo and stalker would end up together because these two men as brother in laws would be epic.  Talk about some fun and competitive family reunions.  I will miss hearing Min Seok calling him a $#*%#$* Weasel.

Witch's Romance Episode 16 (FINALE) - A Seperation and a Wedding

It's official Witch's Romance fans.  We have reached the end of yet another drama and for once it does not disappoint.   It is an episode where happy endings abound and everyone has a nice little moment to finish on.  Also it is no surprise that our OTP (One True Pairing) has gone the distance to achieve their happily ever after.  So let's enjoy our last recap with these awesome and heart grabbing characters.

Relationships Before Work

Dong Ha discovers the notice that Ji Yeon has won the "Global Challenge Award, an award given to only two reporters each year and requires a year long exchange with an English newspaper.   Realizing what an honor it is to be selected, he questions Ji Yeon about it, and why she had not told him anything.  She replies that since she was going to turn it down (because of their relationship) she did not feel the need to talk about it, their relationship means everything to her, and she does not want to stress it this early in.  Dong Ha smiles and hugs her tightly, but eventually tells her to take the award.  Their relationship will be able to weather this trial and he will be here when Ji Yeon returns.

I personally am not a fan of time leaps at the end of dramas.  For the most part, including this drama, are unnecessary.  Especially since he is old enough to avoid the pedanoona pitfalls of some noona romances like Flower Boy Ramyun Shop.  Just seems like more filler to finish out the hour.  On an up note, at least the separation is less then six years this time.

Soo Cheol is My Hero

Soo Cheol has been subtly (at least for him) trying to romance mouse girl for a couple episodes now.  However he is outed when Dong Ha catches him and mouse leaving for a "date".  Dong Ha checks out his BFF's outfit and sniffs the air, then asks why he is wearing his hitting on women outfit and cologne.  Then he puts two and two together and  asks him if mouse is the woman?  HEHEHE  It is so cute, and even cuter when mouse finally reciprocates.  Do I wish he had hooked up with a character with more personality?  Yes.  But at least he has enough charisma for the both of them.

Fast Forward A Year

It has been a year since the parting, during which Dong Ha has been obsessed with his school work and missing his girlfriend.  Soo Cheol is feeling the need to hang out with his BFF and also requires his presence as a chaperon so that he can take an overnight vacation with his mousie girlfriend.  Dong Ha agrees but is obviously a damper on the couples romantic date.   (At least we have Soo Cheol couple to alleviate the moping while Ji Yeon is away in England and I now want to go buy my husband and I matching orange tennis shoes.  So cute!).  

Separation has aged our poor Dong Ha, he is not the shining boy of his youth.  It is credit to Park Seo Joon's acting skills that he can manage to look so worn out yet still handsome all at the same time.   He is definitely a downer for the romantic lovebirds who are in full couple mode.  Dong Ha spends the whole time worrying over his lack of returned phone calls from Ji Yeon.

Surprise! I Love You!

Dong Ha returns to his room early to sit and brood, but instead of an empty room, he finds Ji Yeon waiting with candles and champagne.  I love how Dong Ha is so happy to see her and his eyes tear up a bit.  Then before he can say anything, Ji Yeon pipes in that she needs to speak first and tells him that she loves him.  She explains that this is the first time she has said it first since they have been together, and he needed to hear it from her.  Definitely a wonderful reunion moment by any standards.

This Show is Such a Tease

Come on, you knew the second the writers started spazzing out the cutesy wedding gift shopping scenes that chances were high that it was not Dong Ha's and Ji Yeon's wedding we were watching preparations for (although the PDA moment on the bed was adorable).  I could almost hear the snickering of the writers and shouts of gotcha ringing through the air, as the marriage momma and president ended up being the ones married.  It was a beautiful closing scene in which we saw all the coworkers and then some paired up into blissfully happy couples.  Although I felt bad for her cameraman, who was the only one alone.  I guess someone had to take a photo of all the happy couples.  Let's just consider this drama the equivalent of a present tied up in a shiny red ribbon, nothing and no one were left sad or upset. 

He Even Sings!!!

So due to an awesome friend who loves Yoon Hyun Min as much as I do (quick shout out to Mary Joy Lee in case you are reading) I discovered that he actually began his acting career doing musicals.  There are even several clips on YouTube of plays that he was involved in.  I personally am very impressed with his diverse talent.  And if you want to learn a little more about Yoon Hyun Min and his rise as an actor, then check out his interview about his life and career on our FB page (link at the end of the post).  He is a fascinating and eloquent speaker and I can not wait to watch his next drama.

A Forever Love

I am actually a fan of the little bit of an open ending in regards to this drama.  Ji Yeon was always about more than just a girl obsessed with getting a ring on her finger and just like her character, her relationship has many layers.  Considering Dong Ha's age and extended schooling, I think they made the right choice in not rushing into anything.  The only thing I wonder is on their decision to wait another 7 years.  Personally there is no way i would want to start a family when I am 46.  I am already the mother of three beautiful children which I had all in my twenties, and the idea of being pregnant even in my thirties is terrifying.  I don't care how in shape you are, by then you just get to a whole different level of tired.  But kudos on them for not being forced into a marriage by societies standards.  And when it comes to Kdrama noona romances, it is all about defying societies traditions.

Which is Better?

I was asked a question (by my awesome kbestie and spellchecker, Angela) which was better?  "Witch's Romance", or the original drama "My Queen"?  I have to admit that I really enjoyed both, but when it comes down to it, My Queen was just so so so so very long.  At 21 episodes it really started dragging.  Just imagine it, at least 4 more episodes of Polar Bear couple to sit through, although I will say that My Queen did make you care more about their Polar Bear version.  There was a bit more depth to the plot line which was missing in its Kdrama counterpart.  I think that might be what made our Polar Bear so unbearable.  There just was no depth to his character and he was very one dimensional.  Also the kdrama's OTP had better chemistry (although I think that Park Seo Joon could have chemistry with a stone) which makes a big difference.  And the nail in the coffin was that this version had Yoon Hyun Min playing the BFF.  The characters role in the Tdrama version was A LOT smaller...... and I do mean a lot.  It is credit to his amazing acting that he was able to take a small part and create a larger than life character.  So by all standards the kdrama remake just edges out the tdrama version.  If you feel the urge to go watch the original, just be prepared to do some FF during some of those filler moments.

So you might be asking yourselves, what is next on the Kmuse recapping schedule?  It just so happens that I am ecstatic to be recapping the drama that is replacing Witch's Romance's which is  Seo In Guk's upcoming drama "High School King".

Gap Dong Episode 16 - Intergations and Nunchucks

I just don't understand the theory "everyone can find redemption" ideal that seems to be prevalent in Korean dramas (or if it is not that, then they go the other direction that everyone related to you including your dog should die because of your sins concept) it is such a culture of extremes.  I don't know if it is because I am an American so have a cultural disconnect, or if I am maybe not empathetic enough, but in my opinion if someone killed 9 people then they need to be persecuted for it, end of discussion.  There is no trying to reason with them and make them reflect upon their sins before they are brought to justice.  No, you just arrest them (if you can) and they suffer for what they did.  I don't see the need for a heart to heart with the killers.  Why?  Is it going to change anything?  Get over yourself and just do your job.  I don't want a cop that wants to empathize with the criminals and I think this is one of the biggest problems I have with Moo Yeom as a character. Whether it is a pickpocket, or a serial killer, he wants to understand them and somehow fix them.  This is not a bad trait, per say, but when it comes to a crime thriller, I don't really want to deal with this.  I just want less chatting about life choices and more action.

Detective Gap Dong rejects Moo Yeom's suggestion that he turn himself in in order to be redeemed and free of the guilt (WOW, what a shocker), and is arrested.  When he protests that the statute of limitations has already passed (even if he was Gap Dong) they have no reason to hold him.  Moo Yeom replies that they are arresting him because he is a "menace to the public" instead.  Hmmm maybe my annoying neighbor who lives down the street and plays his music to loud is a serial killer and can be arrested as a "menace to the public".  Weak reasoning on the part of the cops with this one.

It's always the little things that seem to screw over the criminals.  In this case it is the double passports that DGD (Detective Gap Dong) possesses.   One of the loopholes to the statute of limitations is if the suspect had left the country for a certain number of days it is as if he was fleeing persecution.  Due to being a few days short, this originally did not relate to Detective Gap Dong, but the discovery of a 2nd passport under a different name, fixed that.  Or it would have, if they had not still been 8 days short.  So close, yet so far away from success.

"How can you work with the mentally ill, when you are ill yourself?"  Tae Oh says what we have all been wondering for weeks?  How is Dr Maria qualified to work with anyone (mentally ill or not) when she needs so much therapy herself.  Tae Oh questions her abilities when she gives him a diagnosis labeling him as normal (hmmmm even an unqualified blogger like myself would be wondering about that one).  He adds another layer of doubt when he questions her ability to see anything, especially when she thinks that the chief is Gap Dong.  After all, a killer can recognize another killer.  At least we can thank Dr Maria for bringing back the fight within Tae Oh.  Before this he had been timid and confused (which personally was annoying me) but it looks like badass khottie killer is back!  At least for now.

I really enjoyed the interrogation scene between DGD and Moo Yeom for the most part.  It was properly intense, valid questions were asked (although I notice that it was a lot of talking on Moo Yeom's part with only eye twitches from our killer), and proper procedure was being upheld (no beatings and or improper use of hammers involved).  But I should have known it was to good to last.  It was only a matter of time til Moo Yeom brought out the nunchucks.  HEHEHEHE  I swear he is like a magician that can magically make nunchucks appear at a moments notice.  He tells DGD that he should just finish things now and commit a 10th murder and go to jail.  Placing the nunchucks beside his hand, Moo Yeom taunts him trying to instigate an attack.  DGD just looks at him and pushes the nunchucks back, telling him to stop joking.

Tae Oh lures our ditzy teen, Ji Wool,  to meet with him.  Cranky and sick of dealing with his games, she puts on a tough facade and denies him his plea to help him emotionally.  At this point I am not sure if he was actually sincere in his request, or just using her to push buttons.  Either way he sure pushed Dr Maria's buttons, which resulted in her hurling death threats and practically frothing at the mouth with rage.  He correctly guesses that she must associate Ji Wool with her dead friend and continues to taunt til she storms out of his cell.  Yet another breech in ethics since I am pretty sure you are not supposed to threaten to murder your patients. 

She obviously has not calmed down when she begins her interrogation of DGD (is it normal to have victims be part of an investigation?  Especially when they are not part of the police department).  Instead of being able to get him to admit anything, she instead ends up looking like an emotionally crippled crazy girl.  I suspect I would feel a lot more for this scene if Dr Maria had not spent the last 16 episode driving me crazy with her stupid antics and overly large doe expressions.  Whatever the case, chalk one up for DGD, and sign up Dr Maria for some therapy sessions because one of the two obviously has some mental problems.... and I am not sure if it is the serial killer.

I am pretty sure that identification by touching one's hands is still not a legally accepted.  I can't believe that they are expecting us to buy into the idea that Crazy Dr Maria can remember exactly how the killers hands felt (especially when she could not remember his face) and then identify so said hands twenty years later.  I don't know about you, but my hands are a far cry from the way they were twenty years ago.  It is one of those things that changes with age.  But recognize him he does and then he taunts her asking "how did you win rock, paper, scissors?" with a smirk.  This sends the unstable ditz off her rocker again as she attempts to strangle him.  It is at this point that I am wishing that someone would just put this girl in a corner and give her a timeout.  Preferably for the last four episodes of the show.

But nope, instead of a time out, we have to suffer through her poor acting for a while longer.  Showing her adeptness at poor decision making skills, Dr Maria decides that it is the perfect time for to go back to work.  And in the non-sane state that she is in, she goes to visit Tae Oh, because that is just the smartest thing to do right now.  She tells him that she has the ability to get him out of this jail (Really?  You can turn back time from before he confessed to seven murders?) or put him on death row depending on what he does for her.  He asks what she wants and she replies that she wants him to rip out his hero's throat for her.  Is he going to spend all his day's as a pathetic copycat?  Again, if this character had not spent the last 16 episodes being so so so annoying I would have applauded this twist.  We get a tough killer Tae Oh back, and Dr Maria does something somewhat interesting.  However, since I have my "don't agree with anything this stupid girl does" rule in play, I have to suspect that somehow this is just going to turn into another annoying Dr Maria stunt.  To bad, since this is the first time I have found her interesting, in forever.

I have to admit that when Dr Han piped up that he was an accomplice in the 4th murder, I screamed at my TV.  WHAT THE HECK WRITERS!  Stop throwing in killers!  But the sacrificing of himself in order to keep DGD locked up was actually pretty smart.   By outing himself as an accomplice (there were two DNA samples found at the crime scene) he is able to keep the investigation going, where without his confession, DGD would have been released.  Add to that the fact that he had been out of the country for several years (which is added onto DGD's days out of country) and the statute of limitations law is revoked.    They can now officially arrest DGD.  Sorry writers for my wish that the kdrama gods would strike you down.  I rescind that wish.....at least for now.

Random Thoughts

My favorite line of the episode was when Moo Yeom said "I might have died if it was not for my nunchucks".  Oh writers, how you delight me with your nunchuck flavored wit.  Can I suggest that for your next project you do a drama about the love between a boy and his nunchucks?  I promise to tune in.

This concludes a solid episode for this un-solid drama.  I really enjoyed seeing how the writers were able to utilize the police procedures to actually be successful for once.  I have gotten so used to the cops being bumbling idiots, that it is almost a shock to see things going in their favor.  However with four episodes left and the penchant for these writers to take things in weird directions, I suspect we still have some killing left to do.  Because let's all admit that we kind of want to see Dr Maria killed off about now.
