Kmuse's End of Year Countdown - Couples Edition

This is going to be super quick since I am falling behind and the end of the year is already upon us.  As it is, my best kdramas of 2014 will be my first post of the new year.  So without further ado, here are my favorite couples of 2014 - The abridged version.

Top 5 Kdrama Countdown - April Week 4

Can a person be in drama heaven and hell at the same time?  If so, then count me there.  So many newly released dramas, good existing dramas, and amazing upcoming dramas (seriously there are 4 this week alone) that I can barely see straight.  Add in visiting relatives and you have one busy and sleep deprived Kmuse.  But persevere I must since I am sure you are just waiting to hear what the top moments of the week were.

Song of the Week
Melody Day "Another Parting
With all of the music debut's and comebacks on pause because of the ferry disaster (yes, even weeks later they are still on pause) we have not had any new MV's being released.  But never fear since there is always something we can share, even if it is not new.  So enjoy this debut song from Melody Day "Another Parting".  It was used in the web series also called "Another Parting" which starred my #1 bias Seo In Guk.  You can find the links and my recaps for the drama at this link if you are interested in checking it out. http://thecrazyahjummas.blogspot.com/2014/02/another-parting-recap-episodes-1-2.html/

#5 Sexy Voice Overload
If we were going to rank dramas and casts to find the best voices in the kdrama universe, then you might give new drama "A New Leaf" first place.  Casting Kim Myung Min (the Sean Connery of Korea), hot ahjussi Kim Sang Joon, and Jin Lee Han (of Empress Ki Hottie fame) provides us with a sensory overload.  Now if the plot can continue to stand up to the pretty sounds and visuals coming from our TV screens.

#4 Late Night Cuddles
I was so happy to finally get some good couple moments from the OTP (one true pairing) of Tdrama "Fall in Love With Me".  It has not been a bad drama, but up to this point I never really felt that click of connection between our leads.  That all changed this week when Lu Tian Xing & Tao Le Si get stuck in a warehouse together.  He purposefully scares her with fake mouse sightings and they end up cuddling on a couch while waiting for the company to open the next morning.  It was truly a cute moment that made me happy I did not drop this drama.
#3 An Emotional Ending to Empress Ki
**SPOILERS**
Usually I try not to give spoilers to the ending of shows, but since I have seen comments and discussions in abundance online I doubt you have been able to miss them.  But just in case, do not read past this point.  YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
My two favorite characters DIE!!!  SOB SOB SOB.  Both Tal Tal and Ta Hwan pass away and the Yuon empire begins its collapse and eventually absorption into Goryeo.   I knew it was coming, I had read up on the history, and this is a Sageuk (90% of the time at least one member of the OTP dies), but I was still hoping for some kind of happy ending.  As emotional as it was, it was not a bad ending, but rather a bittersweet one.  Both characters had great goodbye moments with Nyang so I felt that there was closure.  Tal Tal goes off to fight and dies in battle defending his ideals to the end.  At least we are saved having to see him dead on screen.  But it was Ta Hwan's passing that really had my tear ducts working overtime.  Poisoned past the point of return by those he trusted, Tal Hwan uses the last of his time to rid the court of all those that would try to harm Ki and his son.  The last scene involved Nyang laying Ta Hwan's head on her lap as she cleans his ears (just as she had done when she first came to the palace).  They declare their love one last time (I was so happy to actually hear the words coming from Nyang at last, that she had indeed loved the emperor) and he passes away holding her hand.  Such a great moment and ending between two wonderful characters/actors.

#2 The Ghost of the Night that Did not Happen
Being tormented by a stalker/bird killer can be stressful for anyone.  So when young assistant/neighbor/almost lover Dong Ha offers to keep her company til she feels more secure, Ji Yeon accepts.  However just the previous night they had "almost" had sex so to say things were awkward would be an understatement.
Ji Yeon offers her savior a beer but quickly recants with an awkward look (over imbibing on beer had caused the almost connection).  Instead they decide to watch TV to keep their minds of the situation, but rather than something bright and entertaining, a steamy make out scene is playing.  HAHAHA.  She quickly switches the channel to find an even sexier scene taking place.  So what do two almost lovers do when everything seems to be a reference to their previous evening.  They listen to the radio of course.  And we viewers are highly entertained by an impromptu competition between the two over the quiz show they are listening to.  I love that both are so competitive and that they can still enjoy the competitive nature of each other.

#1 When Lies are Found Out
Have I mentioned yet that I was 100% wrong about boycotting Angel Eyes (mostly due to the fact that I don't really like the actress playing the lead).  Never have I been so wrong about a drama because this is one AMAZING drama and a must watch for all kdrama fans.  The two leads, Soo Wan & Dong Joo have such a natural chemistry that it is sometimes hard to keep in mind that you are watching a TV show.  My favorite scene happened at the end of Episode 6.
Dong Joo has realized that he must leave his love behind since he does not want to interfere with her upcoming marriage.  Even after she realizes who he is (they dated when she was blind in their late teens before she had a surgery to repair her sight) he brutally crushes her images of what they had had.  All in the name of loving her and pushing her to go on with her life without him.  Dong Joo tells her that he had rarely if ever thought of her and to go away.  He then leaves for the airport devastated by his own actions.  However she races after him, after finding an MP3 player that he had kept voice journal entries on, telling her about his life in the states.  Armed with proof that he had been lying she frantically hunts him down.  Their reunion at the airport brought an emotional avalanche of both tears and smiles to this viewer.

Another Parting Recap Episode 5 - Deja Vu (Finale)

It's the end!  It arrived way to soon and although I wish it could go on for longer at least we get a solid web drama.  In episode 5 we take a turn on the artistic concept train, but are left happy and content (I was expecting a lot sadder ending so I will take what I can get) and back to praying for the kdrama gods to get Seo In Guk back into a drama ASAP.

Another Parting Episode 5
We are back in the past.  Ha Na is sitting at a large desk with her ex boyfriend who is yelling at her that she is a good singer but needs to be sexier.  He then orders his underling to have the stylist show off more of her boobs.  Ha Na continues to look a little confused/angry and just gets up and walks out, saying nothing.
We see the opening scene again of her beautifully made up face staring into the mirror, behind her someone starts pounding on the door and her past self + gun yells at her "why did you do that?"

OK I will be totally honest with you all, I have no freaking clue what this next segment means.  We hear the haunting tango music and get a montage of her floating through sheer window curtains, bathing in an antique tub, playing with robots, and walking in her old clothes in an empty hallway only a silhouette against the bright lights.  Added in the middle was a flashback of her kiss with Hul.  Does she remember, is she shooting a MV (because lets admit that Korean MV's can sometimes not make any sense whatsoever.)  Is she having a bad acid trip?  Who knows.  However next we see Ha Na walking down the street looking really fancy and put together, above the news screen flashes that the singer Seo Ha Na was missing and did not turn up for her debut performance.  YAY, looks like she did change her destiny and avoided the life of lies that awaited her!
She walks along a very familiar bridge (but at least she looks less suicidal this time) and walking towards her we see a familiar sexy alien. WHAT???  How far back in time did she go?  Does she remember him?  Wow he looks so sexy in his priest bad boy outfit.  But instead of him meeting her we see Ha Na come across the suicidal Ha Na and yell out for her to stop.  UMMMMMMMM.  I am confused again.  The deja vu Ha Na tells the suicidal Ha Na to stay for one more day.  They smile at each other and a bus passes in front of the screen and we are left with one Ha Na (the non suicidal one).  OK just taking a guess that there was not actually two versions of her, just this signified the emotional journey and finding herself.  THE END

MUSIC VIDEO
The opening scene is Ha Na singing in a club, just her and her guitar, looking very happy.  She begins the song and a familiar person is in the audience (looking totally yummy).  I am just making the assumption that this is not Hul, but his body that he was in.  She sings (by the way I love love love this song) and we see scenes from the show flash across the screen.  It ends with her walking out into the crowd and kissing Hul (who looks really surprised but not necessarily unhappy about what is happening).
My Thoughts:
Awwwww  I like that in our own way we got a happy ending.   Usually I would hate that they did the whole, the guy looks like Hul so they are swappable as the OTP, but for some reason it works in this show.  It gives me my happy ending and I leave the drama with a tons of happy warm fuzzies.  So what if I totally have to take giant leaps of logic to accept everything.  Not to mention some of episode five was seriously too much artsy interpretative film for my liking.  In the end I left with a very cute OTP that I enjoyed and also a new song to add to my playlist, and most importantly, a whole lot of pretty Seo In Guk scenes etched into my memory.  It was a win win for us all.

My thoughts after I had slept on it:
So I contemplated this drama as I went to bed last night and this is what I decided the final episode means.  The duel Ha Na's including the acid trip artistic scene really means that she was having an internal debate over what she was going to do with her life.  Was she going to change her direction completely or continue down the path that gave her fame while still probably avoiding certain pitfalls such as scuzzy ex boyfriend.  I think she did remember Hul the whole time and when she did not change immediately and continued down the path of fame, old Ha Na (in her head) came at her yelling at her "what are you doing" deja vu Ha Na changed her mind and gave it all up to forge a new path.  And when she went on the bridge she came to terms with her old life and her new life and official decided to embrace a different path and "live another day".  Later she saw Hul's human vessel at one of her performances (where she kept to her indie music roots) and went and kissed him.  I don't think he is Hul but the human who he inhabited but that they will end together giving us that happy ending.
 Sincerely,
Kmuse

Another Parting Episode 4 - Parting

It looks like we might take a turn to the serious in episode 4, but we also get a kiss scene so that might make up for it.  Also be sure to check out the new photos of Seo In Guk for International BTN at the end of the recap.  Could not resist giving you all a little extra surprise gift since he looks AMAZING in this photo shoot.

Episode 4 - Parting

Remember we left off just as Ha Na and Hul stole a car and were driving off into the sunset (or at least figuratively) for as far as they could go.  Turns out that it was not that far since they ran out of gas.  So our intrepid couple continues on foot.  Where?  We don't know, but that is OK since I am pretty sure they don't know either.  Pre-planning does not seem to be their forte.
They begin walking and Hul comments about how cold it is.  Ha Na actually smiles at him (first time her character has not looked suicidally depressed) and offers him her hand.  They walk hand in hand actually looking happy and like a couple on a date.  They decide to break into some type of sauna?  Community Pool? (I can only assume they break in since they are the only people present.)   As they sit staring at the pool, Hul exclaims that it is beautiful and looks like her tears.  Ha Na asks if he has never cried and he replies that feelings are gone from his planet.
Ha Na comments that it must be comfortable on his planet with no emotions.  Hul replies: " No emotions, no tears.  No Tears, no Love."  Ha Na tells him she wants to live there, but our sexy alien just looks sad and says "I want to live here."  He is silent for a few minutes and then asks "Do you think dust can feel as well?"  OH NO.....  I am already so sad and he is not even gone yet.  All he wants is to be loved.... sob sob sob.
We then get an impromptu swimming scene which I totally support.  Both of them jump in clothes and all and swim underwater hand in hand.  AWWWWWWW I love this couple so much.  It also comes in handy that they can speak telepathically to each other so they can continue to communicate while frolicking like water sprites.  She thanks him for stopping her and helping her get through the day since now she thinks she can get through the next.  He replies that he has only one day to be with her which make him sad. (Oh the feels..... keep it together Kmuse, deep breaths).   They come out of the water.  Hul leans in for the kiss.  This viewer is waiting with bated breath for "the kiss" and then..........  the stupid cops bang on the locked door of the pool room screaming that they know they are in there.  WHAT THE HECK........ Worst timing ever!
Unfortunately that is also the second that his watch of doom's timer goes off telling him his time as a human is up.  Hul, grabs Ha Na and tells her it is time to go.  Hul looks at her intently and says "If I take you back you have to promise me three things Hana (her name is the same as the word for one) Never Lie to Yourself. Hana never lie to yourself.  Hana never lie to yourself.  He then slips the pill he was given at the beginning between her lips and kisses her.  And wow, I don't know how but this scene just took so much emotionally from me.  As he kisses her a single tear runs down his face and time begins to rewind.  We see everything flash backwards until she awakes sitting in a seat across from her ex boyfriend who is impatiently trying to get her attention.
OH NO!  Does she remember Hul?  Is Hul now dust since he gave his way home (still not sure how that all works but it does not matter since I am just living in the world they created and not poking holes) to Ha Na?  Does he get an F on his report since he is not able to tell his higher ups why humans cry?  What are they going to do tomorrow for the finale?  UGH I need answers now!  Unfortunately we have to wait tomorrow for the conclusion of the drama.
Also, I just learned that the main point of making this web series was to promote a newer group Melody Day's upcoming single, "Some Kind of Goodbye" which will be released later this week after the finale of the web series.  I will be sure to post it in my blog for those of you interested. Until tomorrow I will just leave you with all these pretty new Seo In Guk photos.

Til then,
Kmuse.

Top 5 Kdrama Countdown - February Week 3

Evil Mother In Laws, Iconic movie reenactments,  Ghost..Ghosts.. & yes more Ghosts, and a sexy alien played by Seo In Guk can all be found in this weeks Top 5 Kdrama Countdown.   So sit back and enjoy the ride as I take you through the best moments in kdramaland during the 2nd week in February
I swear that all the drama writers were eating their awesome sauce this week.  It was so so so hard to choose only five favorites.  I felt like I was letting down all of the other dramas who truly moved me by their awesomeness.  With several new dramas added into the mix, along with all of our current airing dramas (many of them coming to the end of their run) the writers are for some reason throwing out all of their best work.  And while I was unable to put everything in this weeks countdown, I did whittle it down to some of the best of the best).

#5 How Many Times Can A Ghost Seeing Detective Get Hit in the Head in One Episode?
Ghost Seeing Detective CheoYong began airing (or at least subs finally came out for the first two episodes) this week and we were introduced to our hero.  A police officer (Oh Ji Ho - Fugitive Plan B) who solves crimes with the use of the ghosts of the murdered victims.  Due to losing his partner, in a posession ritual killing related accident, he gives up serious crime and becomes a traffic cop.  Five years later he is dragged back into the world of murders and ghosts and meets teenage ghost Han Na-Young (Jun Hyo Seong - Idol group Secret) who haunts the police station.  They team up to fight crime and it is all types of quirky.  I don't know why but they just make the cutest couple of crime fighters (not so much as any type of romantic couple, but more of a master and his unruly apprentice).  I have too admit that whoever the director of this drama is, he has a great and deep love with hitting people over the back of their heads with a wooden stick.  The amount of times our Hero gets knocked out got to the point that I even started to contemplate making it into a drinking game (for us non drinkers such as myself it could be a shot of Pepsi to help me stay up and watch everything. LOL)  So if you want to see a quirky show full of spooky moments, cute squabbles, and our hero developing stick induced brain damage, be sure to check out this new show.

#4 The Women I Love to Hate
(I wrote this after episode 13 and at this point of the show I still think my feelings were justified:)
When answering the question put forth from the title of the show "Can We Love?" for these women I want to shout a resounding NO!  Rarely have I ever loathed a female character as much as I do these three women (well really two of the women and annoying girl in training) from this drama.  Yes, you heard right, not just one character but three.  I am currently hoping that all three women somehow end up having to live together alone with no other human contact (because they are that horrible).  The first of the trio (thankfully she is getting better but still added her in since she was a pill up to episode 13) is the daughter of Ji Hyun, fifteen year old Se Ra who not only finds herself pregnant, but portrays what happens when you spoil your child.  Her level of selfish tendencies and cruelty towards her mother is unnatural.  And I know that a lot of you are saying to yourselves that she is having to go through a teenage pregnancy in an unforgiving culture.  However that does not excuse her horrible behavior before this became known nor after when she sees how her mother is treated.  I hope that they attempt to redeem this character for her mother's sake because you can choose your friends but you can't choose your daughter.
The second detestable character is Ji Hyun's abusive/psychotic mother in law Im Ye Jin.  In all my many many dramas I have yet to see a MIL so abusive and cruel as she is to her husband's wife.  And keep in mind that I have seen dramas where they fake affairs, force psychological illnesses to have the daughter in law committed, and a whole bunch of shenanigans in between and none come close to the evil that is this women.  Her crazy abuse is probably the main reason I would give Jo Hyun's character a free pass for all her past lies because no on deserves to be around that women.  The final women is one I have mentioned in past countdowns.  The mega (insert derogatory curse word of choice) that is Sun Mi brings the crazy B lead to a whole new level when she uses her pregnancy (NOT the main guys child) to break up her best friend with her soul mate boyfriend.  And she does it without an ounce of shame or guilt.  It would at least be understandable if she was totally alone and had no options but we have already seen her ditch two perfectly good men, instead deciding to try and take a man that is not hers.  I think I speak for all of us viewers when I say that even becoming an old alone cat ahjumma is too good for her.  I worry that she is going to find happiness in the end (since this is a Asian drama and they like to redeem people) but I wish that she could spend the next twenty years stuck  watching everyone else be happy around her.  All three of these women deserve a good slap from karma and if we are lucky it will by while we can watch.
The Most Evil Mother In Law in Kdrama History Clip

#3 Karma Comes to the Story of Empress Ki
Talking about karma, Empress Ki rewarded its viewers with the #1 Evil Overlord Family getting a huge heaping bowl full of it.  Nyang's plans come to fruition as the selfish empress is banished to the cold palace (kind of cracked me up that this palace was filled with spiderwebs and icicles yet was supposedly just in a different part of the compound) and began her suffering by having to sleep with no blankets and eat only gruel.  Her brother confronts Nyang who informs him (with the scariest look) that this is not the end of her revenge but just the beginning.  That she won't stop until he is left crying over the broken and dead bodies of his sister and father.  The Emperor is not staying still either and through a series of political moves and help from his supporters he is able to overthrow much of the regents power.  For followers of the show who have hated and screamed at their TV's as these people did horrible things, it was truly a great moment.  I have to admit I probably cheered out loud once or twice.

#2 Bromance ET Style
It was so so so hard to choose a favorite moment from this weeks My Love From Another Star.  There was the great scene where Song-Yi went into super cute baby talk mode when demanding that her alien boyfriend come to her room right now (I think if I ever talked to my husband in that voice there is a good chance he would divorce me.  LOL  Yes it is that annoying).
Cutesy Song Yi Clip
Or the scene where Do Min Joon outs himself as a supernatural being to the world in order to save Song-Yi from dying of poison. You have to really appreciate a boyfriend who shows you and the world how he truly feels.
Our Alien is Outed Clip

But the scene that truly won my heart and is my #2 moment of the week was between Do Min Joon and his future possible brother in law Yoon Jae.  Min Joon manages to get drunk when getting permission from our heroine's father to officially court her.  And we all know what happens when our cute alien gets drunk.  HEHEHE  He flashes himself and Song Yi's brother from a phone booth into his apartment, totally outing himself (before he was officially outed to the world).  Now most people would be a little upset or weirded out by this turn of events, but not Yoon Jae (happens to be obsessed about space, astronomy, and all things alien related).   He instead treats the drunk Min Joon as if he is royalty and the next morning when he sobers up, Min Joon finds that his new friend only has one request.  He slowly puts out his finger and poor Min Joon winces as he reenacts the scene from ET.  This scene officially not only gets on my countdown for this week, but is possibly one of my top favorite moments from the whole series.  So congrats to all you viewers out there that enjoy a little Meta humor in their dramas.

#1 Seo In Guk!!!!
Did I mention that my #1 Bias was back on tv this week!  For those of you who were not following my blog posts, the web series Another Parting began airing this week and episodes 1-3 were AWESOME.  I was not expecting the story to be quirky nor about a Hul, body snatching alien who comes to earth to study the human experience and instead finds love with a suicidal idol Ha Na.  Seo In Guk steals the show with his animated expressions and charisma that pulls you into the crazy storyline.  And at only 10 minutes apiece, the episodes manage to pack in a whole lot of story in a short time getting you to hope that Ha Na and Hul can somehow pull off a happy ending.  I have all the links with subs in my blog recap posts.  For those of you waiting for the conclusion of the show, episodes 4 and 5 will be airing on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

Honorable Mentions
I want to do a quick shout out to a few other highlights of the week.  I know I know, but it just kills me to not reward excellence.  Feel lucky I stopped at only three.

Potato Star - Karaoke Wars
Several of the members of the Potato Star world travel together to enjoy some hot springs.  However due to infighting everyone is silent and angry throughout the whole vacation.  Determined to have some quality family time, youngest son Hye-Sung is devices a plan to bring everyone together.  He cajoles and begs til his family comes out to enjoy some karaoke but instead everyone uses this opportunity to sing out their issues with each other.   My personal favorite was when the garage ahjumma started singing to the mom (her boss) about how her house, kids, and money should have all been hers hehehe.

Beyond the Clouds - Revenge is Pretty
I am excited for this new drama now that I have finished the first two episodes.  They have really put some money into this drama since they shot on location in Thailand.  Can I just say that I love how they went that extra mile to actually go to another country to comply with the storyline.  It gave the whole show an extra exotic feel.  Add to that the fact that leading man Yoon Kye-Sang (Greatest Love- I am so excited he jumped out of the B Role zone) is knocking it out of the park in his portrayal of Jung Se-Ro, an incarcerated patsy for murder and a jewel heist and you could not have made me any happier.

Beyond the Clouds Trailer

Emergency Couple - Sexy CPR
I am pretty sure that no one has ever thought of CPR as being sexy before.  But that was before this scene in Emergency Couple.  Chang Min's emotions are slowly being reengaged for his ex wife Jin Hee.  However it looks like things might be heating up between Jin Hee and her boss Cheon Soo.  Or at least they are in Chang Min's overactive imagination.  I would just like to point out that the music used in this scene is HILARIOUS.  I will never look at CPR the same way.

Steamy CPR Clip

OK, OK, I am stepping back away from the keyboard because I think that I could continue to find scene after scene that I want to talk about this week.  I am giddy just writing about all the shows I love and now I want to go watch everything again.  Unfortunately that will have to wait and instead I will start watching everything for next week.  Who knows, maybe we will find A scene from our first Thailand drama mentioned on my blog now that I am watching the Thai Full House remake (just a quick mention that it is absolutely adorable).  And I am sure that we are in for a crazy finale from My Love From Another Star.  Not to mention we are heading to the final run with our dramas Lets Eat and I Need Romance 3 so maybe they will have some spectacular scenes that we can add to our countdown.  Whatever happens, I am sure I will enjoy every drama filled minute of it.

Till next week,
Kmuse
