Finding Kmovies with Subs - The Good,The Bad, and the Indecipherable.

One of the few things that makes me crazy as an international viewer is getting subs (good or bad) for the Kmovies that I really want to watch.  It is a quandary as to why people are so gunho to sub the dramas, yet there are times that I can go over a year without seeing any subs for various movies.  Do people just not enjoy the movies?  Are they too busy watching kdramas to ever get around to thinking about the kmovies, or is the information regarding kmovies just a lot harder to get?  Personally I think it is a mix of all three.  I know that if it is a choice between watching a kdrama or seeing a kmovie, most often I am going to choose the former (unless of course it contains one of my top bias's in it).  Also I will hear about the casting of a kmovie and then it can be a year or two that I ever even see a trailer (I am talking about you, "The Huntress") let alone the actual movie.  Add on top of that the chance of horrible computer generated subs, which for me is almost a deal breaker, and you have one not so interested fan.

However that is slowly changing.  In the past the only place that I was able to find current kmovies was occasionally on gooddrama.net and it was often a crap shoot as to whether the subs would be understandable.  I personally will not bother if the subs can not even get the sex of the character right (seriously it drives me crazy when the hero is constantly referenced to as a she.).  But in the last couple of weeks people have been sharing some new sites that are streaming more subbed kmovies.  Sites such as hotdrama.net and drama.net are putting out movies at a faster rate than in the past and I for one, am happy.  Now if I can just squeeze them into my kdrama watching schedule I will be set.  Just so you have an idea of some of the newly released movies available, I will do a quick synopsis and trailer list so you have a place to start.  Keep in mind that these are movies that I want to watch (except for the first two which I actually did see and will post my feelings about) so if they suck please don't blame me.  I also added the link to the movie under each trailer if you are searching for it.

-No Breathing-
Synopsis:
Woo Sang is a national swimmer who's always pursuing the number one spot. Won Il is a swimming prodigy who stopped participating in the sport, and now wants to make a comeback. Not only do they become rivals, but they also fall for the same girl, Jung Eun, an aspiring musician who is their childhood friend. The three lifelong friends suddenly find themselves having to juggle love, friendship, and competition, as they undergo the rite of passage of growing up.

My thoughts:
It had Lee Song Suk and Seo In Guk in swim trunks for the majority of the movie.  Do you need more of a reason to watch it?  That aside, the movie itself was all right.   A bit slow in parts (especially the romance) and personally I really wish it had focused a bit more on the competition aspect of the sport, but again it had some major eye candy so I was content.

-Steal My Heart (Love to the Extreme)-
Lee Ho Tae is a hotshot criminal profiler who reunites with his ex girlfriend, Yoon Jin Sook.  She is involved in a hit and run of a serial killer suspect and later is identified as a famous cat burglar.  Hilarity ensues as he attempts to circumvent his own team in catching the love of his life.
My Thoughts:
I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!  And not just because it had Joo Won in it (although that really helped).  It was clever, funny, and well written (which is also another issue I have with kmovies.  Rarely do the plots live up to the quality of their kdrama counterparts.  They often feel incomplete and rushed).  I was laughing through the whole movie and will happily watch it again.

The following are movies that just got subbed that I am interested in watching. I figured maybe some of you would also be interested I wanted to share the love and info.

 -Tough as Iron-
Synopsis:
A young man, Gang-Chul (Yoo Ah In), struggles to make ends meet and doesn't have a regular job. The man then becomes involved with a gang to try to pay for his mother's hospital bills. His mother has Alzheimer's.

Why I Want to Watch:
As you all know, I really like Yoo Ah In so I was pretty much a guarenteed viewer after he signed on.  However it also stars Kim Hae Sook who I loved as the mother in I Hear Your Voice and at least in the trailer they seem to play off each other well.

-Hwayi: A Monster Boy-
Synopsis:

Why I Want to Watch:
Yeo Jin Goo (Moon Embracing the Sun, I Miss You, Potato Star) is an AMAZING actor. He seriously can act rings around 80% of the other leading men out there and he is only 16.  Also the plot sounds interesting and intense which is always a plus.

Set in the 80s, a countryside high school teen named, Joong-gil, is the biggest heartthrob in town. Young-sook, the girlfriend of the school’s toughest bully, has a crush on Joong-gil, but he shows her no interest. One day, So-hee, an innocent looking girl, moves into town. Young-sook thinks So-hee as her rival and picks a fight with her. Meanwhile, Young-sook’s boyfriend suspects ties between Young-sook and Joong-gil and harasses So-hee, whom Joong-gil has a crush on. Joong-gil tries to get revenge for So-hee’s sake, but gets beaten down every time. Synopsis:
A romantic comedy movie about the last generation of youths and their passionate romance based in Hongseong, Chungcheong Namdo in the 1980's.

Why I Want to Watch:
I will admit that probably 90% of my wanting to watch this drama is because of Lee Jong Suk.  The other 10% is because the leading lady looks hilarious.  See... it is not all because of the eye-candy.

I hope this helps some of you kaddicts out there that were looking to expand your love of Korean entertainment.  I personally have been motivated to carve out some time to get started on these Kmovies this weekend.  Now if only Friends 2 can come out with some subs (seriously I need a Kim Woo Bin fix stat) I would be a blissful Kmuse.  Be sure to check back later this week to find out my biggest pet peeve about this winters kdrama fashion.  I'll give you a quick hint.
