Twenty Again ep 2: Dongsaeng's Slam Book

As our heroine, Ha No Ra, heads to college and we watch her try to adapt to this brand new world in which she is automatically and unavoidably an outcast way out of her comfort zone, some things about the past start to emerge. I know. I know. This recap is super late.  So late, that Mask episode 3 is almost up.  But in my defense I was computerless most of the week due to vacation plans so was super behind on my recapping. Producer Episode 2 - The Korean Bachelor Pad

So I will be completely honest.  Recapping this drama is really intimidating to me.  The writing is so cleaver and there are so many meta jokes. Which, while hilarious, are a bugger to explain to a third party.  There is just something lost in translation when I have to tell the joke, say why it is funny, and then laugh awkwardly while I hear cyber crickets coming from my readers.  So in other words, I have no clue what I am going to recap.

Ouroboros Episode 2 - The Wrong Path Taken

We had great progress this episode as we watched our two dragons fight against societies concepts of forgiveness and what it means to stay on the right path.  Especially when the right path seems to be littered with those killed or hurt by the societies worst scum.  It makes our anti-heroes question their vigilante motivation, and makes us viewers wonder if our leads are really heroes or only more of societies drudges who went down the wrong path.  We also get so much wonderful fan service via a bath house scene, which helps a lot in distracting us from the fact that we are rooting for murderers.

Well, hello there!  Annyeonghaseyo! And welcome to this week's second installment of Pinocchio recapping. If we are just meeting now for the first time, my name is Dongsaeng and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I will be handling the even episodes of this drama while Kmuse takes the odds. I, like my awesome bloggy partner, am extremely excited to tackle and recap this drama! If the rest of the episodes hold up like these first two did, we are in for one fun as heck ride, don't you think?!

Initial Thoughts On Blade Man Episode 1 & 2 - Unexpected and Entertaining

Oh, "Blade Man" (previously known by the title "Iron Man") how you entertain me.  So much to say, (some of it actually complimentary which is unexpected) so much to mock and question "what the fudge?"  I am not sure if I will actually be recapping this drama (Rain's big comeback starts next week, so there is stiff competition for my recapping attention), but I at least wanted to put some of the many thoughts I had while watching this drama, to paper (or whatever the online equivalent of paper is).  Who knows, this show might engage my creative juices, even though I am still predicting an epic crash and burn situation.  But just imagine the literary bonfire it could create.  It might even provide a better mocking recap than Gap Dong, and Gap Dong was pretty epically mocked. 

I will admit that I started watching Blade Man simply to see how bad it was.  How can I pass up the opportunity to watch a drama where the man literally has blades growing from his body.  Simply consider all of the questions this abnormal feature brings forward.  Where do the blades come from?  Is this a hereditary problem (judging from his father and the actions of his butler I would not be surprised) or just a special one time thing?  How does he not know that he is having fits of rage that result in the springing forth of swords?  And most importantly, Why is he so angry? 

 Let's start off with a recap of our characters.

Joo Hong-Bin (Lee Dong Wook - Hotel King) is our leading man and VERY VERY VERY angry.  "Why is he angry" you might ask?  Hmmmm I am not sure if we get a really good reason for his anger issues.  He does have a cold, controlling, jerk of a father (but so do 90% of all kdrama leading men).  His girlfriend was poor and left him because of his father, but really I was expecting at least a murder/accidental death of so said girlfriend, to be the reason for his anger. Nope, she was alive and having his child in America (since the child is now alone in Korea, I can only assume that she is now dead) so that can't really be the reason.  From what I can tell so far, the only reason for his extreme anger is a jerk father and a feeling of entitlement.  You might be asking again "Kmuse, what makes him different from every other jerk Chaebol in a kdrama?"  The extremeness of his anger is what makes him different.  He not only is angry, but literally beats, destroys, decimates, anything or anyone in his way when he loses his temper.  It was at such a level of abuse that I winced when he was chucking computers and other office items at his two employees when they did not meet his standards.  It went way past the line of funny to very uncomfortable. 

Let's take a break from the unfortunate subject of his abuse and focus instead on all the quirks the writers decided to give him.  I have this image of a bunch of writers trying to figure out what super powers to bestow upon our hero?  Then when they got to the end of the day and were still debating, they just said screw it... lets put them in a bowl and whatever we pull out is what we will go with.  Seriously, I am pretty sure that is how it went.  Either that or they were really really drunk.  

Let's tick them off.  Most obvious of course are the bounteous swords that come out of his body when he gets angry (or more importantly, when he tries to control his anger and not physically beat anything).  Second is the ability to create rainstorms and cause electrical power outages.  Why?   How does this at all relate to the swords and how does he not notice that this happens every time he loses his temper.  Finally we come to the oddest ability of all, Hong Bin has a super sniffer.  Yup, he can smell everything even if it is far away and this of course causes him massive anger.  Anger at the maids for using the wrong detergent, anger at his staff for using too much cologne, anger at the housekeeper for having spoiled marmalade in the fridge. How can a poor man focus when he has to get angry about so many things. 

Luckily there is one person who does not send his super sniffer into a tizzy.   Our poor plucky heroine (of course she must be poor and plucky, for what good kdrama superhero story would write it otherwise.) has the magical scent (maybe her shampoo) that does not make our angry hero, well, angry.  Son Se Dong (Shin Se Kyung - Fashion King) is the catnip to Hong Bin's cat and it cracks me up when he goes into a kind of serene trance anytime she  is nearby (check out the below picture and understand that Hong Bin is standing there sniffing her essence.  Se Dong of course thinks he is some kind of sniffing pervert.  

Se Dong is not just any random good smelling female.  She is also part of a team which designed a game that was bought/stolen by Hong Bin's company.  One of the co-creators of the game sold it out from under the rest of his group and ran off to America with the money.  Se Dong being the leader of the remaining geek brigade goes to Hong Bin's workplace to demand that he hire them to finish up the game.  Lots of cute arguing happens between the two, but the issue about the game remains unresolved.  Unfortunately for Se Dong, the Geek Brigade got drunk and decided to take justice into their own hands.  Spray painting a clever design and the words thief on Hong Bin's imported stone wall, they were all arrested and it is up to Se Dong to come up with the money to pay restitution.  This forces Se Dong to get a job caring for a little boy (Chang) which leads us to the next character in our lineup.

Chang, cute little six year old ball of adorableness.  He is the son of Hong Bin and ex-girlfriend who fled to America.  Abandoned under unknown circumstances and brought to Korea by a shady neighbor Ahjumma.  He was then abandoned again in the airport by Shady Ahjumma and picked up by Se Dong who had been tracking down her game stealing coworker.  Chang took a shining to Se Dong and when he would not stop crying the police agreed to let her take him home (and later agreed to pay Se Dong if she became his caregiver while they searched for Chang's guardians).  Only in Korea will they let some random stranger off the street take home a perfectly good little kid with no background checks.  I am totally having a face palm moment at this plot twist.  I foresee this being the driving force between Se Dong and Hong Bin's relationship.  Not only will Se Dong have to cure Hong Bin's "anger issues" but will also  forge a bond between father and son, support the Geek Brigade, battle Hong Bin's evil father, and manage to not stab herself on her future boyfriend's swordy back during any back hugs that may occur.  That is going to be one busy heroine. 

I saved my favorite character for last!  The super talented, ever sexy, khottie of all khotties, Secretary Ko!  Or as I will call him in the future (if I actually end up recapping this of course) Secretary Studly.  He is AWESOME!  Not only does Secretary Studly handle Hong Bin and his anger related rampages with a delicate touch, he is efficient (ordering new equipment to replace everything his boss breaks), has the reflexes of a ninja (seriously he is either a ninja or an alien with superpowers of his own.....I am not putting anything past these writers), and somehow hides his boss's sword sprouting secret from everyone........including his boss.  How Secretary Studly manages to keep that secret a secret is beyond me.  I about died laughing when he hefted Hong Bin over his shoulders, running away from a father induced fight, to avoid sword sprouting consequences.  Secretary Ko truly puts all other secretaries to shame. 

Overall Thoughts:
In all its crazy, I actually was highly entertained.  I compare it to a more Manga/Japanese style of drama due to its topic and over the top style.  It was a total shock since, after seeing the trailers and posters, I was expecting a train wreck of epic proportions. But the extreme overacting worked in the context of the story and for once Lee Dong Wook's crazy angry eyes fit the characters storyline.  The extreme expressions actually made me buy  his character more then if they had tried to play this off in a more realistic manor.  

The same can be said of Shin Se Kyung's performance.  Is it overacted to the nth degree?  Yes, but considering I hate Shin Se Kyung's usual acting style, this was a wonderful surprise.  I have hated her past work so much she was even in my top 5 least favorite actress list, one to be avoided if at all possible.  So you can imagine how much better she would have to be for me to praise her.  Is Se Kyung suddenly a great actress?  No, but she is tolerable and works within the premise of the story. 

I loved how innovative the director was in using the fast switches between camera angles and odd framing of characters in the shots.  Their bodies are all falling off the edge of the shots.  It made the show seem fresh and caught my attention.  It was nice to see something different then the boring back and forth between two characters.

That said, I am still kind of expecting things to go down in a ball of flames.  I just don't think that this type of pace can be kept throughout the whole drama and if it sinks into the melo-zone, then all the things I like about it now are going to disappear. So I am hesitant to commit to weekly recaps.  What do you think? Should I go for it and chance a possible disaster, or go with a more safe drama like Rain's upcoming romantic melo?  I am torn.

My Secret Hotel Episode 3 - How to Romance Around a Tragedy

The mystery part of the drama (Who murdered Ice Pick McCreeper?) takes the forefront as our hero gets a reprieve (he seriously did not seem broken up that the wedding was off) and the heroine becomes the focus of her coworkers death.  Who killed McCreeper?  Why are there so many secrets in The Secret Motel.  Why is it called "The Secret Motel"?  Is it wrong that my mind raises straight to mistresses, hidden children, and idols in hiding?  At least a few of our questions will NOT be answered this episode (laugh...... it is a secret after all) but we do get some fun scenes as we go through the "who done it" journey.

My awesome friend Patty pointed something out last week in regards to the feel of this drama.  My Secret Hotel is the Korean John Hughes meets cult classic movie "Clue" 80's style drama that we did not even realize we had been waiting for.  The music (notice the techno beat and the emotions that the main theme song bring every time you hear it), the quirky side characters (Cowboy Cop, Bad Hair Frenemie), and our very own Korean Molly Ringwald (Yoo In Na), all combine to create that feel of a great romantic character driven 80's comedy.  My nostalgia for my childhood must be kicking into high gear because I can't get enough of this drama.

Before we were even able to pick a nickname for the creepy ice pick carrying coworker, he is dead.  Yup, we officially have our murder victim and it is Mr Suspicious Creepy McCreepster himself which makes me a tad bit sad since he was quite adept at being sinister and suspicious.  Now we can start to question who, in the long line of suspects, murdered him.  Was it Colonel Mustard with the Ice Pick in the Ballroom?  Hahaha.

Enter the high profile crime detective Kim Geum-Bo (aka.  Urban Cowboy Cop, love his fancy decked out boots and torn jeans.) who is one trail of the murderer.  Geum Bo shakes things up as his loud personality shakes everyone up wondering why he is always winking?  Does he know everyone's secrets?  I do believe I recognize this rebel cop.  He is played by Ahn Kil-Kang who is doing double drama duty for TvN, also playing my favorite witch in Surplus Princess.  Just when I think I have him pigeon holed he changes his style channeling Miami Vice.  Yup, he is just proving my 80's cult classic theory.  Congrats Ahn Kil Kang, you win my award for favorite side character in a drama/or dramas as the case might be.

I believe that my ears started bleeding at one point from listening to the high pitched wails that the female second lead, Yeo Eun Joo (Lee Young Eun), emitted forth in one of her many tantrums.  It is always a relief when they make the fiancee, who is about to get dumped, truly horrible.  Then I, the viewer, don't have to reflect on the jerk move of almost leaving her at the alter.  The writers have succeeded spectacularly at making Eun Joo unlikable and you almost wish that she had been the one slapped during her post wedding rampage.  Blaming poor Sang Hyo for her wedding woes, she demands some kneeling and apologizing satisfaction.  Of course Hae Young interferes and tries to keep his wayward bride from striking a second time.  Things were quickly getting out of hand when our, (kind of hot if you like that type of look) puts Eun Joo in her place and sending Sang Hyo away from slapping distance.  Eun Joo seems highly impressed by Sung Gyeom's strong presence, but Sang Hyo is just pissed at seeing his supposed rival. 

And let the competition for the fair Sang Hyo's affections begin!  Hae Young loses no time in flexing his proprietary "she is mine" muscles (even though no one knows that is what he is doing yet) when he meets his pretty boy nemesis Sung Gyeom.  He even vocally warns Sung Gyeom to not do anything for Sang Hyo, you know, since she is his.  But the threat was lost in translation and went totally over his fiancee and Director's heads.

Driving back from the hotel, the ever annoying Eun Joo, is full of chatter over how masculine and perfect Sung Gyeom is.  Hae Young gets crankier and crankier as Eun Joo remains oblivious, the nail in the jealousy coffin is when she comments that the director is perfect for Sang Hyo.  Hae Young pulls over and promptly goes into a rage destroying all the flowers and balloons covering their car (remember they were supposedly going to be married at this point before the murder).  I could not stop laughing at the way his rage was expressed, very amusing moment.

Oh snoopy, stalker, reporter girl, you are all that is wacktastic in a "I will randomly insert myself into the plot even though my character is just kind of here to create havoc" way.  I personally want to know how she knows these two were married.  Was she an uber stalker even way back when?  And more importantly, did she have anything to do with the eventual demise of their marriage?

Not that I think Hae Young is the actual murderer, but the writers are doing an excellent job of creating doubt.  From the lost wallet, the maybe confession to wacktastic stalker girl, to the flashback of Hae Young being all sexy protective and putting McCreepy in his place, all signs are pointing directly at our hero.  Hmmmmmm, I don't think that I have actually seen a drama where the lead is put in prison for murder and still got the girl?  Do you think we will see the writers jump out of the box, douse the box in gasoline, and then light it on fire?  Somehow I doubt it, but you never know... could be kind of amusing.

Ice Pick McCreepy, you were creepy in life, yet that is nothing compared to how creepy your ghost is after your demise.  I have a feeling I might wake screaming from nightmares induced by your blue tinted apparition.  I actually liked that Sang Hyo kept imagining her coworkers ghost everywhere.  It kept the suspense part of the plot front and center throughout the whole episode and even helped move the plot along during the long stretches of story without the OTP being together.  Which leads into my rant of the day.

 Don't get me wrong, I loved this episode very much.  However........WHERE WAS MY OTP (one true pairing) ACTION DURING THE 2ND HALF OF THE EPISODE?  We get one small scene with the two of them together, and while it was really cute, it did not satisfy my romantic needs.  I needed more longing stares, I needed hitched breaths and cheesy 80's style repetitive Secret love music.  Instead I got a whole lot of Sung Gyeom putting the moves on his subordinate.  It is a good thing that I don't drink, let alone attempt the "Sung Gyeom says something that could be construed as sexual harassment" game, because I would be 100% sotted at this point.  From comments ranging from, "You are beautiful", to "take off your pants", he ran the gambit on words you should not say to a female employee.  I know it was meant to come across as 2nd lead romantic, but to me it definitely had a "my boss is a perv" vibe instead.  It does not help that I just don't like Namgung Min to begin with.  His character in "I Need Romance 3" enraged me with his neanderthal personality and I think my dislike for his previous work is coloring my feelings for him in this drama.  I will give him props for his beautiful hair this time around, but that is all I am willing to concede.  Death to the 2nd lead since I need my sexy Jin Lee Han to get the girl.

The Joseon Gunman Episode 2 - No Sword, No Gun, & Up a Creek.

Sweet!  A whole episode full or couple cuteness with a little action and political shenanigans thrown in for effect.  Could a kdrama viewer ask for anything more?  Episode 2 continued with the same mix of epic storytelling mixed with amazing cinematography.  And if our leading characters are a little on the naive side, well, I am sure it is  only a matter of time before the cruel world takes care of that.

We left off with our OTP (One True Pairing) facing off, gun vs, sword, cross dresser vs. historical hottie,  Jung Soo In vs Park Yoon Kang.  Yoon Kang rushes forward with his sword raised and Soo In shoots, luckily towards the sword and not Yoon Kang's head.  As his sword shatters in half, Yoon Kang gapes at the broken shaft.  "This is why I told you to leave me alone.  A sword can never win against a gun" Soo In yells.  Finally, realizing that the person crying in front of him is not the assassin, he tells Soo In to stop crying like a girl.  Oh my goodness, the guy is a tad bit dense.  I would understand not making the connection if he had not seen Soo In recently as a girl, but there is no excusing his lack of recognition.  Her hair is just pulled back, she is not even trying to change her voice, or fake facial hair.  This is not rocket science people! He lets her pass on her way still stunned at the destruction of his sword.

Further down the road the real assassin lines up his gun's scope on the last remaining scholar, pulls the trigger, but misses due to Yoon Kang's father throwing him out of the way.  He tells the scholar to run, and then pursues the gunman yet again.  Poor Bad Ass Daddy, every time he gets into a fight I brace myself for his tragic death.  Sometimes knowing a synopsis can be a curse.  But of course this is a Sageuk (historical drama) which means that people are going to be dying right and left.  The trial of the Sageuk is being able to absorb and overcome the emotional crippling depression you get when a character you like dies.  I still mourn for a few characters (won't say from which dramas since that would ruin the tragic surprise) years later.

But it is not BAD's (bad ass daddy) time yet, and he magically manages to run down the gunman who is trying to escape on a horse (Yup, running upon the rooftops, trumps traveling by horse in Asian film.  It's  a proven hypothesis.) and is able to capture the assassin.

FINALLY, we have some movement on the whole guy is really a girl situation (thank goodness since I don't want to spend all of the remaining happy times in the bromance zone).  Yoon Kang asks Soo In to please put on his hat, and when she over enthusiastically refuses, he questions if she thought he was stupid or something (hmmmmm maybe for a minute) and that he would not figure out that the face is the same on both people.  Soo In again denies, and Yoon Kang says, "Ahhhh the voices are the same as well"  He continues to tease Soo In about calling the police since such a dangerous criminal lived at the house.  She just huffs off, eager to hide her gun where the police won't find it.  As Soo In finally decides on a good hiding place in the yard, we hear Yoon Kang's voice call out if that is really a good place to hide such a dangerous weapon.  Our poor heroine is caught between a rock and a romantic lothario.  

Yoon Kang announces that he will keep her secret........if she brings him tea in the morning.  And the next morning as Soo In brings him his requested tea, Yoon Kang changes his mind and decides he needs a different tea (all the while grinning).  Poor Soo In is ready to bean him with a tea pot when he then declares that he no longer feels like tea, and to bring it to him tomorrow instead.  HAHAHA.

Finding out the reason for Soo In's manly disguise, Yoon Kang offers to help her with her clandestine meetings (and then ruins it by telling his bestie about the professors departure).  She tries to fob him off but Yoon Kang points out that the port is a long distance to travel and going alone, she would be stuck out of town overnight.  By using a horse they would be there and back before anyone noticed.  Soo In reluctantly agrees and they set off the next morning.

For those of you who have forgotten, the book that our heroic couple is transporting, is the last works of the assassinated professor from episode 1.  He wrote it in an effort to let people know the steps needed to create an society of enlightenment, the very thing that the bad guys want to stop.  As the leader of the conservative party says "Sometimes a book can flip a world." which is why they must keep this book from being spread to the masses at all costs.  If the book exists then the professor lives on with his ideals..

It is funny how Yoon Kang,while reading the all important book, just mumbles "how can it say equality for everyone on every single page."  Phtttt the boy is obviously not a scholar.  He then tells Soo In to be careful since this kind of thing can get her arrested for treason.

They arrive at the port just in time to give the scholar the book.  But sadly, for them everyone knows that the scholar is trying to escape and the gunman assassinates him in front of Soo In's eyes.  A very cool gun/arrow fight occurs while our OTP try to escape (with the book), which causes the big bad to follow after them.  Did anyone else get a "Terminator" vibe as the head assassin came up out of the water? 

As they run for their lives with Terminator Assassin on their trail, Yoon Kang tells Soo In to hand him her gun, to which she sheepishly replies "I don't have it".  HAHAHA  Looking at her incredulously, she rushes to say that since she almost shot someone, and is too afraid to use it.  What about Yoon Kang's sword?  "You broke my sword, what do you think, that I am a sword merchant with a lot of extras?" is our hero's reply. Ha, these two crack me up.  They struggle to stay ahead of the bad guy, but eventually Soo In's strength gives out and they pause at an abandoned house.   

These two have obviously never watched a horror movie.  When the bad guy is hunting you down, avoid places such as conveniently deserted houses (especially when it is the only shelter for miles around).  Sure enough our hunter discovers the creepy building and begins searching room by room for our couple.  Having seen his arrival, our OTP quickly wiggles under the floor and stayed silent as the assassin searched.  He shoots into the floor just inches from their faces, but some stray rats come scurrying out which assures him that they are not there.

Nothing like a near death experience to create the right mood for love.  At least that seems to be the case with our hero.  Yoon Kang wakes up the following morning with his arms around Soo In.  They each fake sleep and casually separate before going to the river to wash the sleep from their eyes.  Yet another mistake since a good hunter knows that prey always comes to water sources at dawn and dusk.  Although this time it looks like just bad luck that they all arrived at the river at the same time.  The chase begins yet again, with our OTP running into a dead end.  Deadly assassin in front of them and a huge cliff behind.  Yet another great cliffhanger (pun intended hehehe) that leaves me wishing it was already next week.

Random Thoughts.
Yoon Kang is just so open and likable that it is impossible not to smile when he is onscreen.  He looks at the gunman and current dangers almost in an abstract way, they exist, yet don't really touch his world.  It is not a real for him even though his father is involved with catching the gunman.  You can see this when he tells his best friend about the professors departure and also his disbelief that a gun could defeat a sword.  It is not that he is not aware that the danger is there, it is just that he has been sheltered and not had to deal with that type of reality yet.

Soo In is very similar to Yoon Kang.  She wants to do these important things and support the enlightenment movement, but at the same time her families lifestyle and standing have left her very sheltered.  Soo In does not question that she can take care of herself, even though her actual skill levels are not up to par.  We see this with her reactions to her gun, horses, and of course Yoon Kang as a man.  The poor girl is just in over her head.  Luckily she does not come across as stupid and annoying, just innocent and naive.

Choi Hye Won is one super scary lady.  It is rare that you have this strong of a B leading lady in a Sageuk.  Sure they might have some type of power from their families position, but for the most part the 2nd leads tend to be innocent and sweet.  Hye Won is none of those things as she strikes terror into the hearts of those that oppose her.  I find it very interesting that even when her father is present, she takes command of the situation.  I truly hope that she continues to be a worthy adversary for our main couple.
