Producer ep 7: Feet Firmly Planted Back on One Ship

Remember how a couple of episodes ago, I was unsure of which "ship" I was sailing in regards to Seung Chan? Whether I was all about the Noona Ship with Ye Jin or the Umbrella Couple with Cindy? Well, I am here to let you know, unequivocally, that I am fully on board the.....

Ha! Did you think I was going to give it away already? Pssh. Nah. We still have an entire episode to discuss first before that. You so silly. We'll get to that soon enough, but first, how about we take a look at some of the finer points of this episode?

Ouroboros Episode 7 - Blood Bath at the Haunted House

It's a bloody fun time at the amusement park as every cop and their minions show up in search for either answers or to keep answers hidden.  Thankfully some secrets are finally out in the open, but for every secret revealed only more questions remain and I personally am as confused as our boys on who is the good guys and who is the big bad we need to watch out for.

Pinocchio Episode 7 - Idealism Falters Against Reality

Hey all!  Did you survive the holidays?  I am happy to say that I did indeed survive, although the # of episodes I am now behind is a bit staggering.  You might have noticed that we had a small jump in episode recaps.  Don't worry, Dongsaeng is still planning on releasing 6, just her Thanksgiving week was much busier than mine (or maybe she just ate to much turkey and had a super intense turkey coma) so blogging was not able to be part of her schedule.  That saying, she will get ep 6 out ASAP but we did not want to get behind so we are blogging on!

My Secret Hotel Episode 7 - Signs You Should Pull A Runaway Bride.

Where to begin?  This episode was jam packed to the gills and I can honestly say that a good 2/3rds of the episode I was shaking my head and yelling "what?  what?  WHAT?" at my computer screen.  And that was with my husband still awake and giving me the "my wife is crazy and it is all kdramas fault" look, that I usually try to avoid.  There was so many interesting, odd, and essential plot line in this episode, that I am actually going to break my blogging rule and give you more of a play by play of events.  Because when you have this much confusing crazy unexpected plot twists, you just have to break a rule or two.

But before we get to the interesting stuff, there is the pesky engagement that shouldn't be.  This sucker needs to be nullified ASAP.  So let's discuss the facts, and why this group of people should all be pulling a "Runaway Bride" about now.
I tried, I really tried to see what you all see in Jo Sung Gyeom, but I think I am a lost cause.  I just keep getting visions of control freak boyfriend from him, and his constant time related ultimatums don't help at all.  Preparing to leave for some kind of work related weekend, he hunts out Sang Hyo in order to affirm their new dating relationship. And also order her to get over Hae Young by the time he returns. He then has her fix his tie (symbolic sign of commitment - I see the tie more as a metaphor for emotional bondage's of doom) and heads off, comfortable that his woman will be waiting when he returns.
All I can say is if you start the conversation with the sentence "You keep avoiding me even after agreeing to date me." that says something you control freak.  Run away Sang Hyo while you have a chance.
Moving on to our, soon to be married couple, Heo Young and Soo Ah, are also having a case of cold feet.  For the last six episodes I have not been a a huge fan of the bride.  At best, she has been dense and bubbly, at worst she has been the typical chaebol entitled heiress who treats her peons like crap.  But I guess the writers wanted to give her a good send off (oh please let her be gone for a while) allowing her to pull her own Runaway Bride (we have to free up the groom somehow without making him a total jerk for jilting someone at the last second).

Soo Ah calls her groom on the phone, dressed in her wedding finery, and driving to the venue......next to her boyfriend the chauffeur.  As she tells Sang Hyo that she loves him more than anything and always will, she is OBVIOUSLY talking to her driver who is teary eyed next to her.  Um, if you are confessing to your secret boyfriend while on the phone with your fiancee, then maybe it is time to stop the wedding.
What I find surprising is that Hae Young (the one that has been the most antsy about this wedding) is the one most likely to go through with it.  He might be busy brooding in his hotel room (Does anyone else think his suits are resembling a marble counter top?) but he is planning on going through with the dreaded wedding.
Chauffeur boy toy ends up being the voice of reason (or at least of impetuous naivete) and announces that he and Soo Ah should ditch the wedding and run away together. YAY!!!!  The wedding is off. Or is it?
Hae Young receives the the unfortunate wonderful news, but before he even has time to process this turn of events, Sang Hyo is screeching for him to go get the bride back since she has to throw this wedding or her job is done.  Have to admit that this was not Sang Hyo's shining moment.  Sympathy, thy name is not Sang Hyo.
But her rampage leads Hae Young to have a wonderfully crazy idea.  Instead of having no wedding, he will follow what fate is obviously telling him, and just marry Hae Young.  He gets his parents and even his ex-future mother in law in on the plan (seriously so crazy that everyone is going along with this.  You don't see that often with Korean parents) and sets his plan in motion.
Lastly, he goes to convince Sang Hyo who is breaking the bad news to her staff in the ballroom.  Everyone is about to panic when Hae Young arrives saying there is going to be a wedding, and the bride will be Sang Hyo. BWAHAHAHAHA.  You have to give Hae Young (and the writers) kudos for going where no drama has gone before.  Determined to snatch back his errant wife for a round 2, Hae Young informs Sang Hyo that this would solve all her problems.  Sang Hyo gets the wedding for the hotel like she wants, and Hae Young gets the woman fate put back into his life (although in true Sang Hyo fashion, she assumes he just wants to avoid the embarrassment of being jilted.)
Things might have ended there, because really, stepping into an ongoing wedding as the "new" bride is just plain cuckoo.  But frenemy, love rival, coworker, Eun-Joo, sees an opportunity to get rid of Sang Hyo and runs with it.  She orders Sang Hyo to get married to save everyone's job.  "Look at the string quartet! If you don't get married they are done for.  What about the rest of us who will lose our jobs?  Marry for the good of the hotel!  It is your duty as a boss."  BWAHAHAHA  Eun Joo even calls for a show of hands of wedding supporters and Sang Hyo stepping in as the bride.  All the employees raise their hands and Sang Hyo is the only one against the nuptials.
Now you might be wondering how a person can just switch out the bride with no one noticing?  Hae Young has his almost mother in law send out a group text to the bride's party saying that the wedding had been switched to a different location, then shooed everyone that had already arrived out the door.  The hotel employees then quickly replaced all the name decor with Hae Young and Sang Hyo, hoping that most people don't remember the exact names written in invitations.  Eum Joo even grabs the bride's name (written in icing) off the cake, stuffing it into her mouth, when a spry older gentleman began questioning the problem.
They would have gotten away with the ruse if not for Ms Buttinski, who vehemently objected to the change in bride (is it just me or does this girl have something to do with their initial break up/misunderstanding?  I am getting some serious vibes).  But Eum Joo was on a role, and no jealous hoochie was going to waylay her chance with Sung Gyeom the wedding.   She admits to the bride change, but then goes on to wax poetic about lost love found again, second chances, epic titanic level romance, until the crowd all has tears in their eyes.  This time when Ms Buttinski tries to object, the crowd boos her into silence.
Hae Young arrives at the front of the wedding hall and we wait with baited breath to see if he is going to jilted for a second time.  Sang Hyo's name is called and nada (I am embarrassed to admit that I also was holding my breath waiting to see if Sang Hyo would show up).  Her name is announced for the 2nd time, the doors open, and in walks Sang Hyo, dressed to the nines and being walked down the isle by her boss (her other boss not her boyfriend boss).  She truly does look breathtaking as she walks down the isle.
Romantic looks are abounding, love is in the air, heartfelt vows are exchanged, all while the bride has her fingers crossed within the folds of her skirt.  HAHAHA, seems that Sang Hyo is still a bit bitter over being railroaded into this ruse.  It is obvious that Hae Young is alone on his newly discovered devotion to their relationship.  Poor guy. His smile slips for a second, but Hae Young has the last laugh as he pulls Sang Hyo into a steamy kiss.
But lets not forget that this drama is supposed to be riddled with murder.  The mystery plot line takes a huge jump forward as we have our 2nd victim.  After arguing with an unseen person, blackmail coworker is bludgeoned with a candlestick in the bathroom (seriously people, I am not making this up to fit into a "Clue" theme.  It really happened.)  There is a chance that I was busy laughing at this when I should have been feeling bad for the poor deceased.  It will be interesting how this plays out in the next episode.

For the most part, the episode has been Sung Gyeom free since he was on a work vacation while his girlfriend accidentally got married.  But our 2nd lead did have one funny part that really has to be explained or it comes across as very very weird. No, Sung Gyeom does not have a mysterious twin, doppelganger, nor is he married and have amnesia.  Instead his "wife" is from the variety program "We Got Married", in which he was one of the grooms.  Hong Jin Young does a cameo where she pretends he is her lost husband NamGoong Oppa (his actual name).  I found this cameo very enjoyable and cute.... as long as you realized the reason behind it.  Otherwise the writers just went totally wonkers in an episode that was already edging past the unhinged line in the sand.
I am looking forward to the upcoming hijinks as our newlyweds go off on their honeymoon.  Will sparks fly?  Will we finally have some actual communication between our OTP (One True Pairing).  Will I like Sung-Gyeom any better? Who knows, weirder things have happened in this drama.

Til then,
Kmuse

The Joseon Gunman Episode 7 & 8 - I Love A Good Nemesis

We spent this week mentally traveling in circles as everyone tried to figure out if Hanjo really is Yoon Kang, with varying degrees of success.  And while I thoroughly enjoyed this layer of the drama I am really starting to anticipate Yoon Kang working his way up the levels of liars to the powerful men that really framed his father.
Is it upsetting anyone else how stupid all of the people in Yoon Kang's life seem to be.  They don't think anything of screeching his name willy nilly  even though he is wanted for treason.  WTH little sis?  Have some common sense and realize that he is ignoring you for a reason and maybe you should not go crying that he is your brother for every psycho ahjussi to hear.  Your brother is not giving you negative head shakes and slapping you just for the fun of it.

Have a bit of 2nd lead regret.  Hye-Won is such a great character and I sometimes find myself wishing she was the lead.  It is not that I don't like Soo In, but some times I find her lack of common sense and life skills annoying.  I just wish that Yoon Kang was in love with someone who would be an actual asset in his quest for the truth, rather than a cute but bumbling girl who hurts his situation more often than helps it.  I truly hope to see Jeon Hye Bin have larger roles in future projects since she is doing such a great job.

The same can't really be said about the 2nd male lead.  Kim Ho-Kyung  is just so plain vanilla in a drama full of colorful and dynamic characters.  I can see how the writers initially set up his character to be interesting and dynamic but somewhere he has been whitewashed in the execution.  He is the illegitimate son of the 2nd in command of the traditionalist party.  He is pretty much giving his father the bird as he becomes one of the leaders of the progressive movements.  Ho Kyung should be that perfect mix of defiant son/bad boy that we viewers love to love.  But instead Soo In's maid leaves more of an impression on my mind (wow she is annoying) than Ho Kyung does.  I am crossing my fingers that we get more character development for him in the 2nd half of the drama since I know that the actor is better than this.  He was one of the few things I enjoyed about King's Family, but is just falling to the wayside in this drama.

I find the Choi's family and their political dynamic fascinating.  Yes, Choi Won Shin is on the side of the conflict that we consider the "bad guys".  He is a killer for hire and trains men as highly efficient mercenaries yet we see that he does have a heart when it comes to his daughter Hye-Won.  A daughter who was a slave and saved by Won Shin and elevated to her current position.  It is obvious that she is his weak spot and might be his downfall in the future.  It is very enjoyable that Won Shin is a perfect nemesis for Yoon Kang.  Both men are surviving the best that they can and deathly capable in combat as well as fighting with their wits.  They are so evenly matched that you never know who is ahead in the game they are playing and that keeps the story interesting and moving forward.
We end episode 8 with a smoke filled bang as Yoon Kang successfully saves his sister just as Yeon Ha is about to be touched by the pervy minister of justice. Yoon Kang utilizes Soo In's ability to create a smoke bomb and uses it as a distraction to sneak in and save his sister.  Unfortunately he is forced to murder the scuzzy minister in the process since he was about to slice Yeon Ha with a sword for attacking him as he was attacking her.  Yoon Kang then takes that moment, a moment which would be better spent running away before the smoke clears, to have a touching reunion scene with his sister.  Which again would be so much more touching if it was not right as one of the gunman get his scope set on the siblings.  Luckily the bad guy misses and we get to see Lee Joon Ki do that awesome gun cocking spinney move he does.  I am taking a wild guess that Yoon Kang escapes to fight another day.
-Random Thoughts-
Was surprised at the flashback where Yoon Kang was having a rough time in Japan.  For some reason I had just assumed that he was taken in and raised up from the moment he was fished from the sea.

I am really enjoying the king and the political aspects of this drama.  My only complaint is that we get too little politics (sorry I am a total junky for historical/political maneuverings) and too much creepy old ahjussi ringing his hands and plotting in his sinister whiny voice.

His secret identity is kind of a poorly kept secret.  Everyone knows (except for our two leading ladies) and is acting accordingly with that knowledge.  Evil merchant Choi is out to expose him while still keeping his trade agreement with the Japanese, bestie Jung Hoon is suddenly taking an interest in his job and helping Yoon Kang with all his schemes, and sister is just being dragged all about with a constant upset look on her face and no deeper thoughts.  (I am kind of remembering why I was not fan of that child actress.  Definitely has the one upset look down pat and does not deviate).  It will be interesting to see how he gets out of being tried for treason when his identity is so well know.   If I had a wish I would love to see him hook up politically with the king to make change happen.

King of High School Episode 7 & 8 - Seo In Guk...The King of Skinship

So due to a serious of unfortunate events on my vacation (most of them involving the staircase from hell and falling down so said staircase) my blog post is way overdue.  So in order to attempt to not be weeks behind, I am combing my favorite moments from both episodes into one fangirl, spastic, OH MY GOSH THE KISSING, blog post of awesomeness.  OK, it might not be completely awesome since I am still only able to sit up for a limited amount of time, but at least it will be done.  The only problem now is trying to figure out how to condense two epic episodes into one puny recap.  There is no way I can truly do the talent/sexiness of Seo In Guk justice, so if you have not already watched these two episodes, then hurry and view them ASAP.
Since there is just so much to discuss I decided to narrow down my comments to my favorite aspect of the drama which is the sweet relationship between Min Seok and Soo Young.  Can I just marvel at how much they work as a couple.  I know that Soo Young can be a bit offsetting with her odd mannerisms and seems to walk to a different drummer, but Min Seok also is very alone despite the many people surrounding him.  He has his high school friends who seem to be immature in comparison to our lead, a family who seem to love his brother just a tiny bit more, and coworkers who are in a different part of their lives than he is.  Sure Min Seok can fake the job (he is faking it so beautifully) but at the end of the day, they are never going to be more than coworkers to him. But Soo Young has touched something within his psyche that has previously remained dormant, his heart.
Which brings the question "How does a high school student who is impersonating a 28 year old genius director, woo the girl of his dreams?"  Let's just admit that those teenage hormones are killer at the best of times, and that is when you are stuck in crushes and puppy love mode.  Add just enough maturity to make Min Seok really fall "in love" and not just "in lust", but an immaturity that makes him unable to wait and control those romantic impulses, and you have a speeding Min Seok shaped train heading towards confessionville.  But first we get the wonderfully awkward "what am I doing?" stage.
We start episode 7 with an unexpected 10 second hug where Min Seok is confirming "something".  Min Seuk hugs Soo Young for 10 seconds (does anyone else think he is super sexy while counting) and then thanks her and says he will see her tomorrow at work.  Poor Soo Young is left baffled after the encounter.  The next morning (after she had spent the night obsessing) Soo Young confronts Min Seok about the hug and asks him if he is gay and interested in Jin Woo.  "Are we in a love triangle?"  Phhttt...  Poor Min Seok adamantly (his wow's are so adorable) denies that he is gay which leads Soo Young to question if he likes her?  Poor Min Seok again acts flabbergasted (only this time a tad bit too slow to be convincing) and tells her that he just misses Germany where they always hugged.  Min Seok then walks into the office and hugs everyone vigorously.
Poor Min Seok is forced to watch the woman of his dreams date his nemesis. That is not going to stop him from attempting to spend as much time with Soo Young as possible, especially if it comes between Jin Woo and his lady love.   Seeing that Jin Woo and Soo Young are preparing to go on a walk.....alone...in the romantic woods, Min Seok sneaks in and orders her to accompany him to buy drinks for the team.  Soo Young reluctantly goes and is concerned that bugs are going to get her.  Min Seok being the gentleman that he is, starts to see fake bugs all over the place.  He sports a huge smile as Soo Young jumps into his arms to avoid the imaginary bugs.
Luckily for us viewers who love the OTP (One True Pairing), the romance between Soo Young and Jin Woo is short lived.  It is not long before Jin Woo's nice facade shatters, as he orders Soo Young to spy on her boss and report all of Min Seok's movements back to him.  Poor Soo Young realizes that everything is fake and Jin Woo really is a total #@(*&.  I cheered when Soo Young chewed him out and repeated Min Seok's reprimand "You are a jerk and lack the basics."

Min Seok hears this whole conversation on his phone (Wow talk about convenient timing) and starts running (such beautiful running) to find Soo Young.  He catches her coming home, depressed and in despair.  Now you would think that a normal person would assume that this is the time to comfort her, and then slowly work your way into her heart.  But not our hormonal, headstrong hero.  Oh no, he kisses her and confesses.  Like any normal sane person who has just been smooched by their boss, Soo Young is totally unprepared and promptly runs away.  Even leaving a shoe behind, Cinderella style, in her haste to escape this new predicament.  Poor Min Seok is left looking clueless holding her shoe as he watches her run away.

The maturity problem comes into play yet again as poor Min Seok continues to aggressively profess his love, overwhelming poor Soo Young.  She finally tells him that she just finished loving someone yesterday and that she needs time and is not interested.  Seeing how upset Soo Young is, Min Seok finally agrees to let her go and just be professional.
But a professional relationship is not as attractive as Soo Young had assumed it would be.  Min Seok (in an effort to give Soo Young what she wants) becomes very indifferent, bottling all his feelings inside.  Feelings that he releases by eating massive amounts of steak, and exercising.........lots and lots of exercising.
Thank you to the stylists who put Seo In Guk into those awesome sexy sleeveless exercise shirts with the hoodies.

Exercising until he overdoes it and sprains his arm.  (Seo In Guk actually did injure himself during filming, but the writers were brilliant and wrote it in to the script giving us an amazing kiss scene.  Best use of a sling EVER!!!!!)  Soo Young realizes her feelings for her boss when an earthquake hits the location in Japan where Min Seok is supposedly working.  She anxiously calls him over and over, until they are able to meet up in their neighborhood.  Min Seok comes up behind Soo Young, giving her an amazing back hug saying "I can't give up on you" to which Soo Young replies "Okay.  My answer is okay."  Min Seok then gives her what shall forever be known as the sling kiss, and millions of fangirls (including this one) gave off a sigh of contentment.
I am so happy that we have arrived at the "official couple" stage.  I am sure it is going to be short lived since we still have the whole age, sister stalker, lying to the company, did I mention the age issue, thing to deal with.  But until the fallout begins, I am going to squee to my hearts content over how happy these two lovebirds make me.

Gap Dong Episode 7 - The Game of Crazy

Remember how I said that this drama is finally getting back on track plot wise?  Well color me wrong, because episode 7 took a sip of the crazy juice.  This episode seriously had me screaming WTH every five minutes, and that is not a good thing when you are watching a crime drama.  I consider it in par with the American B style horror films that you can find on TV late at night.  They are never great, but you can't stop watching once you start. Don't get me wrong, still worth watching, if for no other reason than you can shake your head and wonder what the writers were smoking when they wrote this. My personal theory is that they are actually playing one of those dice role playing games (i.e. Dungeon and Dragons) so that every time they take a move the Dungeon Master comes up with a new crazy circumstance that they must overcome.  So join me as we travel into the game of crazy and find out what our "characters" have been doing.
Scenario - Our two main characters are on the rooftop of a building, playing Russian Roulette.  Roll the dice to see if our villain dies.
Outcome - No, our beautiful psycho does not die, in fact he is alive and well while our "hero" is lying on the ground SHOT IN THE HEAD by his crazy tiger ex boss.  Go straight to hospital and learn that you will now be playing the game while a bullet is left inside your brain.  But don't worry you have rolled an 8 and will avoid brain damage and be reinstated at work, despite the Russian Roulette and chopping off your boss's finger.  Because isn't it fair......chopped finger is the equivalent to a bullet in the brain, now you can have a nice and calm working situation free of mental anguish.  Or if there is mental anguish you might not remember, since there IS a bullet in your brain.

Scenario - You are attempting to navigate the Sea of Korean Police Bureaucrats.

Outcome - You have rolled a 2 which means that you are in serious danger.  The higher ups have decided that they would rather have a serial killer on the loose instead of some bad press (or you know, any investigation that involves anyone (rich people) that are higher up the social ladder than the hobo on the streets .  And if that Hobo rolls the writer number and is able to afford a lawyer, then you can't even arrest him.  Prepare to be told to take responsibility for the actions of the resident psychos ASAP.  Will most likely be fired and thrown out of the building.
Scenario - You are a previous victim and have a serious case of survivors guilt.  Also you are supposedly a top criminal profiler and trying to take down the killer Gap Dong, in order to alleviate your guilty conscience.  Will you succeed?
Outcome - You rolled a -5 (I know there is really no number like that in a role playing game, but there is nothing positive about Maria Oh's character Development) proceed to achieve doe eyed bimbo status.  You will spend your remaining time in the game doing inappropriate activities with your patients and invite known serial killers into your apartment for a bit of tea.  You will also take up crafts in the attempt to sculpt the face of the killer that you saw 20 years ago.  But just in case you forget, you have the police sketch in front of your face for reference, you know, for accuracies sake.  You will also officially be known as the dumbest female character that has ever graced Kmuse's TV screen.  Because, yes you really are that stupid.

Scenario - You have been warned that you are the possible next target of the Gap Dong copycat killer.  You have police protection to guarantee your safety from so said killer.  All you have to do is STAY IN YOUR FREAKING HOUSE YOU STUPID GIRL!, and you will live to see another day.
Outcome - You rolled the dice but it fell under the table and you were too stupid to pick it up.  Instead you were busy texting on your phone with the boy you KNOW is the suspect in the serial killer case.  He tells you that your crush is with another woman and you LEAVE YOUR HOUSE!!!!!!  You convince the simpleminded policeman that you are somewhat intelligent and just want to see your crush and confirm his fidelity with your own eyes.  When you see your crush with another woman you run off ditching your police escort until you walk directly into the killers clutches.  Prepare to die you imbecilic twit of a girl.
There you have it, the game of crazy played by the writers of Gap Dong. Admit it, you are starting to wonder if my theory has some merit aren't you?  What surprising twists and turns await us in the next 13 episodes of this hilariously horrible drama?  (YES THAT IS RIGHT, THERE ARE STILL 13 EPISODES TO GO!).  Tune into my blog tomorrow to find out.

Sincerely,
Kmuse
