Well, well, well...so things kind of got a little crazy this week. Lots to talk about this time around. So many different things to talk about - where should we even start? Should we start with the baby-faced villain that is crazypants and on a hypnotic rampage causing mayhem and trouble wherever he turns? Or the power-seeking cousin who finds out Seo Jin's deepest, darkest secret and gets the company turned over to him without him having to even fire a shot? How about that girl,

My Secret Hotel ep 12: Turning Tides

Well, hiya there! Dongsaeng here doing something that I haven't done much of in my past few recaps of this drama - spreading some hope and joy for all the Hae Young/Sang Hyo fans out there. This episode starts to turn things around for our very frustrating lead male. And yeah, I'm backing down from my "maybe Director Jo is the true lead and the one who will get the girl, ever think of that?" stance. I think episode 12 clearly started the tides turning in our sweet, annoyingly frustrating Hae Young's direction and he's definitely going to be our victor after this long, drawn-out, bitter battle of all of our feels.

First of all, though, I know they want us to start to suspect that Director Jo could possibly be a creepy murderer. As far as I'm concerned, there is no way he killed McCreepy, but I suppose it is always a possibility that he unintentionally took out Miss Blackmailer. And yes, I say "unintentionally", because I still can't fully accept that he is a full-blown psycho murderer. We have seen way too many positives from him. I feel he is a player and womanizer with the potential to be a jerk, maybe, in some situations. Let's just say that he's not one I would want to cross or get on the bad side of. But a cold-blooded killer? I'm just not seeing it.

We start out with our newly wedded exes preparing for a visit from Mom and Dad Goo. They are about to head to the US and are stopping at Hae Young's for a week, and expect to see a little wifey there. Cue the puppy dog eyes from Hae Young along with the whole "bad heart" sob story/guilt trip. We later find out that this visit from mom and dad was not exactly a surprise visit as HY made it out to be. Oh no. No, when Eomma and Appa called, it was simply to tell their son that they were headed to the States. HY is the one that instantly saw the potential to use this opportunity to win SH back, and begged them to cancel their flight and come stay with him for a week. Whoa there. Not sure if I'm impressed or a little pissed at him for this deception. I guess that it is kind of both. He has seen himself for being the pathetic hanger-on ex and is determined to change and win her back. I suppose I can applaud him for that, even if I take slight issue with his manipulation of the situation.

Sure enough, SH moves in, under the false idea that Daddy will die if she doesn't. Nice. (not really) But, methods aside, I am happy to see her there. As is Hae Young. He's enjoying this wayyy too much for his own good. Like when they were hanging the GINORMOUS wedding photo. Omo. And not only that, but how he sat there in a chair and stared at it once it was hung. Like in he actually set up a chair in the spot in front of the photo so that he could sit there for who knows how long and gaze upon it. Not creepy or weird at all. Nope. Yet, for some reason, when he does it, yeah, sure, it's kind of endearing. He can pull off pathetic pretty darn well without too much creepy/weird vibe. My hat's off to him for that. *slow clap*

The domestic scenes with these two were very touching to watch. They really are cute together. And, like I mentioned before, I think we start to see things turn around for Hae Young and his lady love. Just as HY is getting less loserly, Director Jo is getting more creepy-y. Scales are tipping here, folks! Scales are tipping! The fat lady has not yet sung - our boy is still in this race, and in it to win it!

Uhm, yeah, so I don't know what else to really say about this episode. There wasn't a whole lot as far as plot development outside of the relationships shifting. SH is staying with HY and playing house in front of his parents. There are many "awww!" scenes involved here, like the flashback to the wedding and HY on his knees begging his parents to let him go through with this wedding to SH instead of Soo Ah because of his intense and sincere love for his bride ex. Also, there were the kinds of scenes you'd expect to see from such a house-playing arrangement - "accidental" bed sharing, amazing back hugs in front of mom and dad, teasing about his "performance" issues, etc. And of course a very conflicted SH, who, every time things start to go nicely with HY, hears her boyfriend's hurt and accusing voice in her head about not thinking of him. Oh yeah, she is definitely having moments where she is obviously falling for HY all over again. I mean, she may not know this or want to admit it, but we all can see that she certainly has residual lingering feelings for the man. It's not like their relationship ending was expected. She never had that "closure", so of course there's still going to be unresolved emotions there. Duh. Does she really think that she can just ignore him and pretend that there is nothing there? Guess what, Sweetie, doesn't work that way. Sure, if you never saw him again, you could probably go on your merry way and live a life with some scars, but relatively unaffected by your baggage. That's obviously not an option here. He's back in your life, like it or not, and the least you owe to yourself is a really straight-forward, open and honest conversation with the man that just up and left you 7 years ago. Which actually brings up another talking point that has been on my mind...the breakup.

Seven years ago, we had a super adorable and crazy in love couple of newlyweds. All was right in their world. With one major exception. His job was in NY. Hers was in Las Vegas. Both careers were budding. Both were a fulfillment of individual dreams, goals, hopes and aspirations. HY a star architect, and SH in the hospitality industry of her choice. Neither was willing to give up their individual dream. So what are they to do? Well, if you're HY, you take off for NY without a word and leave a plane ticket for you wife in hopes that she'll follow you there. If you're SH, you sit on the floor for days without moving until you pass out and then move on with your life, pretending as best that you can that you're over him. Yeah, so, how'd that work out for you two? Mmmhmm. Fast forward 7 years, and fate has brought them back together. Except, circumstances are different now. Now, the thing that came between them 7 years ago is no longer a thing. They both live and work their dream jobs in the same town. Except now of course they have the whole messy breakup thing to deal with, as well as minor things like pesky fiances and new boyfriends. The fiance thing is taken care of (how much do we love Soo Ah now, now that she's not a contender? I think she's crazy adorable and funny), and the boyfriend may end up being a murderer, so there's still hope there I guess. All that really and truly stands in their way of happiness is that freaking conversation that they have yet to have. Though, I must say, things are improving in that area. HY is less mopey and stalkerish and is learning to speak his words and his feelings with all sincerity. He's talking to her. She's starting to listen. We're getting so much closer! Woohoo! 7 years ago just wasn't meant to be. Not that they weren't right for each other, but that the timing was off. Now the timing is right. Perfectly right. Oh, so right. Now they stand a chance. Before we had right people, wrong time. Now we have right people, right time. Or at least we will, once we get rid of the extra people trying to gum up the works. Can no one see that fate is in control here? Why fight it? Embrace it. Embrace that these two crazy kids are just meant to be together and let them be. Don't stand in the way of love. Let it live. Let is fly free and unfettered.

And that's all I really have to say on this episode. For the rest of it, I guess I'll just leave you with some pretty pictures. Pictures that gave me hope and butterflies. Oh, how I love hope and butterflies!

The Joseon Gunman Episode 11 & 12 - Everyone's Secrets are Revealed.....More or Less.

Hello my dear readers!  I know that you probably were wondering what happened to me and my Joseon Gunman recaps and I would just like to apologize for my tardiness.  Due to life and KCON (mostly KCON) I fell behind in not only watching all my dramas, but also my recapping so I will be frantically watching and blogging this week so I can be caught up. 

Episode 11

I will be discussing the episodes in separate sections rather than a whole since I watched one two weeks ago and then the 2nd one today.  Unfortunately that leaves a lot of time for my mind to get hazy about episode 11 so my thoughts might be brief.

Let's first discuss Soo In who truly must be one of the densest woman ever.  How does she not realize that Ho Kyung is eying her as a potential wife.  Especially when he is hanging on her every word and trying to fulfill her every whim.  Guys don't do that just for fun and not expect more than mere friendship.  Of course she might be slightly distracted by the beauty that is Park Yoon Kang who possesses all of the flashy qualities sure to attract a girl.  He is equal parts bad boy revolutionary and sweet caring brother.  What is not to like?  Poor vanilla 2nd lead does not stand a chance.

Poor Yoon Kang has a boss who is maybe going to ruin his plans of revenge and mayhem.  Don't know why, but that just cracked me up.  Yoon Kang has to put his revenge plot on the back burner and quickly make some connections with the local tradesman or it sounds like he is going to be in some trouble.

His boss might not need to ruin his revenge plans since his annoying little sister is doing a fine and dandy job all on her own.  Hearing rumors about a gunman's death, she runs straight to her brothers house (the brother who is supposedly dead and please recall that she is a wanted fugitive as well as an escaped slave).  After verifying that Yoon Kang is OK, she is almost caught (lets just admit that she was caught and just not captured since her quick about face was fooling no one) by Merchant Choi and his daughter.  Yet another nail in the, is he or isn't he Yoon Kang, coffin.

It seems like Merchant Choi is having his own problems as he attempts to start making deals with exiled Kim Byung Je.  It seems that creepy politician ahjussi has tried to mess with him one too many times and plans are in the works to throw off the creepy ahjussi's yoke.  I for one would love to see the old man get what is coming to him.  Yet again I would like to say how sad I am that Yoon Kang and Merchant Choi could never become allies (because of the whole, I killed your father, issue.).  They are both such amazingly well developed characters.

Episode 12

Stepping up his "who killed my father search" as Yoon Kang just starts kidnapping the next link in the chain pointing towards the big bad political ahjussi.  He sends a note stating to send the man who shot his father to a preset location and sat there waiting.......Yup, no hidden plan, just waiting, which is slightly simple minded in my opinion. It is no wonder that he gets caught and his identity confirmed by Merchant Choi.  It is only luck that allows him to escape death, and even then he is also identified by the head of the police (his dads previous 2nd in command). His secret is firmly out of the box.

As I continue watching the drama I am getting more and more of a feeling that the story is really about two gunman, not just Yoon Kang.  You have to wonder how narcissistic these nobleman are to think that they can continue to treat a trained warrior like a slave without having to face the piper.  Merchant Choi practically oozes menace when he is in the gunman persona and yet they think nothing of insulting and slapping him.  Half the time I expect them to suddenly show up dead with a gunshot as the cause of death.    And just as I finished writing the above paragraph Merchant Choi turns on the stupid noble jerk and shoots him.  It looks like the hunting dog is officially off its leash.

Choi Hye-Won continues to be one of my favorite female characters as she discovers the truth about her father and his identity as the gunman.  You could see the conflict within her as she realizes that he had murdered the father of the man she loves, as well as attempted to kill her best friends father.  Her resolve strengthens as she informs her father that even if Hanjo is Park Yoon Kang he needs to leave him alone.  "The day you kill him is the day you lose a daughter".  WOW!  She is one tough as nails heroine and yet again I am left wishing that she was the lead in the drama. 

Even with his daughters threat hanging over his head Merchant Choi continues to plan Yoon Kang's death, just not before he gets the connections with the Japanese company first.  Yoon Kang also plans his eventual confrontation with Merchant Choi (aka The head gunman) but decides he needs to get evidence first before he has his gunman showdown.

Hye Won makes her decision on where her loyalties lie and goes to visit Yoon Kang where she declares her love and asks Yoon Kang to let Soo In go from his heart and let her stay by his side and protect him instead.  Hye Won tells him that she has known his secret for a while (worst kept secret EVER) and that it is her desire to have Park Yoon Kang for her own.  Well that is one way to confess to a guy.  You have to give her props for being direct and knowing her own mind.  Hye Won then goes and has a nice and subtle girl talk with Soo In where she tells her bestie to forget Yoon Kang and settle for Vanilla Boy.  I am just taking a wild guess that Hye Won is not going to handle rejection well and at some point in the future that aggressive one track mind is going to be turned against Park Yoon Kang.

It amazes me how long the writers have had Yoon Kang and Soo In circle around the "secret identity" that is no longer a secret.  I am just thankful that we finally have the OTP (One True Pairing) just come out and say that they know that each other knows and where do we go from here?  I think we have reached the point when it starts to become stagnant when nothing changes.  There is only so much noble "I am saving you by keeping silent" idiocy that one can take.  After being faced with the proof that Soo In does indeed know his secret, Yoon Kang once again tries to force her away for her own good.  Of course that only lasts for about 10 seconds before he runs after her and embraces her tightly.   Can I just pray for some plot movement between these two next week because so far they are coming in a close second to vanilla boy as the most boring part of the drama.

The episode ended with a great scene between our two antagonists Yoon Kang and Merchant Choi.  It was pretty much a who's cojones are bigger contest between the two as the match wits in a I know and am going to take you down, but not yet verbal contest.  Each ends up grabbing the others shoulder (right where the identifying wounds reside) as the spout verbal "hypothetical" threats. HAHAHA.  I could watch these two go up against each other for the rest of the drama.  It is a fact that they have more chemistry and interest with their relationship then Yoon Kang has with our leading lady.  I can't wait to see what happens when they take off the gloves and really start to fight.

Witch's Romance Episode 12 - 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover

As I started this episode I pretty much had a constant inner dialogue going on in my head that went something along these lines: "leave him.... leave him.....ugh I hate Polar Bears.... just die already.....Why?  Why are you dating him?"  Of course my mind wandered towards what I would write for my recap, since I am always trying to figure out new ways to portray similar information (Doesn't it feel like we have been wishing Polar Bear gone for a really long time now?) and then I swear the muses stuck this song in my head and it has been repeating for the last hour as I got more and more annoyed with Shi Hoon and his narcissistic annoying personality.  So this is my theme for episode 12 and feel free to listen to this great song by Paul Simon titled "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" as you read.  Also we will be counting down some of my favorite breakup lines, just in case Ji Yeon needs some help telling Polar Bear to get lost.

It's you, not me...I mean it's me, not you.

When I am in a pissy mood, my dear significant other knows about it.  When I am unhappy about something, I of course send out unhappy vibes into the universe and he figures out that I am upset.  If I have had a great day, my husband notices and usually comments upon it and asks how my day was.  What I want to know is, how Polar Bear can be so completely oblivious to the huge signals of despair that Ji Yeon is throwing out.  She might as well be wearing a T-Shirt that say "I don't love you", since the vibe can not be any clearer.

"Our relationship is like doing push ups on your knees... It's just not working out"

Ji Yeon gets more and more anxious as the wedding preparations begin to steamroll forward.  Not only does her mom have her getting married within a month, but Shi Hoon is already house hunting and writing out their 10 year plan.  When she musters up the courage to ask if they are maybe rushing too fast towards the wedding?  Polar Bear asks if it is because of Dong Ha, then tells her to not worry since she will forget as time goes by and it will get better.

If a guy, specifically your fiancee says the words "Don't worry, as time goes by it will get better" in regards to you be anxious over the wedding, DON'T BELIEVE HIM.  He is lying and trying to push you towards an unhappy future. You might think that you want to have a giant polar bear because they are exotic and larger than life, but what you really want and need is a cute puppy.  What happens when you are pushed into getting the Polar Bear and you are forced to actually deal with it.  Can you even imagine the amount of  cleanup and effort that would require? That is a level of crap that you don't want to commit to.  Take the perfect puppy that you fell in love with and fits your lifestyle.  At least he listens to you and is house trained.

"Hey baby, are you being followed? Because I've been seeing people behind your back."

No matter how hard Ji Yeon and Dong Ha try to stay apart, fate and the intertwining of their friends are thwarting them at every turn. Which is causing equal parts joy and despair for the couple.  They always seem to eat each other up with their eyes when they accidentally meet, go into their old camaraderie, and then deep depression when they must come back to their separate realitites.  It is a cycle that they can't seem to break no matter how much they each say they are going to let the other go. 

"Is it hot in here or is this relationship suffocating me?"

Even Ji Yeon's marriage obsessed momma is noticing that things are not all flowers and hearts between the couple.  She questions whether this really is the right decision for her daughter.  Poor Ji Yeon can't even seem to muster up fake joy and instead just looks more miserable as she says that Shi Hoon is a good man.  But her mother gently says that sometimes feelings change and that she is more invested in her daughter being happy than just having her marry because she thinks she ought to.  Such a wonderful scene between mother and daughter, and hopefully this much needed motherly advice will sink in to her stubborn daughters psyche.

  I have finished my unfinished business with you. 

Things come to a head when BFF Na-Rae has some stomach pains on the way to the wedding photographers.  Thinking she is in mid-miscarriage (actually was constipation and gas from overeating), Ji Yeon directs the driver to take them straight to the hospital where Na Rae's husband and Dong Ha meets them.  Time pauses as Dong Ha sees Ji Yeon in her wedding dress and I think he might have literally stopped breathing.  It is obvious that they are emotionally connected and it finally gets through to Shi Hoon, who sees the pair together (when Ji Yeon had not even bothered calling him to break the photography appt.).  Rather than interrupt the lovebirds he just stomps away.

Hum, sing, whistle 50 ways to leave your lover constantly.  

Shi Hoon finally gets the hint, and is a major narcissistic donkey, who deserves to be run over by a herd of rabid jackalopes, when he confronts Ji Yeon later that night.  (WARNING: I would just like to say that it is very late as I am writing this and maybe some of my comparisons and word choices might move towards the creative side of the spectrum. And for those of you wondering what a Jackalope is, I provided a photo below). 

Polar Bear tells her that this relationship is just not working for him since Ji Yeon refuses to put him first.  He also says that he knows that she waited for six years, but he can't even handle waiting the several hours at the studios without being angry.   And since he is now so angry with her selfishness they should just break off the wedding. 

SERIOUSLY?  That is how you do the right thing and break off your relationship when she can't?  Shi Hoon could have easily taken the higher road and broken things off in a mature and classy fashion (Seriously she would not have hung on to you), instead he acts like a total complete jerk and says hateful things to drive her away.   I truly think he was doing it to give her the out she obviously wanted, however the execution was very poorly done.

I feel that finally we are seeing the end of the Polar Bear couple and we can finally get to the good romantic OTP stuff that we have been waiting for.  It is time for Ji Yeon to become more proactive and go hunt down her man.  I just hope that he gives in quickly since I personally can't wait to see Dong Ha and Ji Yeon walk off into the sunset wearing couple T-shirts and annoying people with their high levels of cutesy love sickness.

Gap Dong Episode 12- A Plethora of Killers

Is there anyone in this drama who has not murdered, accidentally murdered, attempted to murder, or even just seriously injured someone?  Writers, this is getting ridiculous.  You must realize that.  RIGHT??  RIGHT??  I know they are trying to drive home the idea that anyone can be a Gap Dong (killer) given the right circumstances but it is getting to the point where you should just kill off the whole town and call it a day.  (If you want to see this concept done right, hunt down the 8 episode drama called White Christmas.  It was a brilliant look into the question of whether a psychopath was born or created by circumstance.)

We have a flashback where Chul Gon is on a stakeout.  An unauthorized stakeout since he had been taken off the Gap Dong case.  He sees what he assumes is a suspect in a raincoat turn and run away.  As he gives chase, the suspect falls down an embankment, dying from injuries sustained from the fall.  It turned out that it was actually a woman, dressed in a man's rain jacket running from someone she assumed was Gap Dong.  Dropping his badge at the scene, Chul Gon goes drinking to get the courage to turn himself in.  

But the next day the body is found tied with Gap Dong's signature knots and added to the death count of the serial killer. (Did anyone else love the fact that the killer was watching him the whole time and claimed the victim?  I thought that was a clever addition to the story.)

Han Sang Hoon had found his police badge at the crime scene and suspected the truth behind this death.  However he hid it because he did not want to ruin Chul Gon's career.  Or was it secretly because he was Gap Dong?  Either way the information was suppressed and preserved in the form of a bloody badge that was found by Moo Yeom twenty years later in Sang Hoon's office.  

After retelling Moo Yeom the story, Chul Gon turns himself in, along with the written confession he had been carrying around since the incident.  But of course this being the profession of cover ups, the big boss's of the police department decide it was an accident and since the statute of limitations has already expired they only dismiss him from his job.

I was wondering how Tae Oh was going to get out of the whole murdering a flight attendant on a plane situation.  It seems that this time he truly might be caught for good.  When the body is discovered, rather than finishing the flight, the pilot turns back to Korea and Tae Oh is arrested upon landing.  

Brought to the Police Station he encounters twit girl, Ji Wool, who is busy blaming herself for the latest murder.  It seems that Tae Oh had asked her to come with him, to be his emotional brakes, but she declined his offer.  Now that he killed again, she is busy weeping and wailing.  Ji Wool literally is still unable to grasp the concept that he is a killer since as she puts it "he looks so good".  Sigh... Sad the opportunity for her death has passed, because I know a sure fire way to make this show reach a higher level of intelligence is to just kill off both females.

A very subdued (yet still smoking hot) Tae Oh sits in the interrogation room.  Nothing seems to catch his attention until Han Sang Hoon (who is profiling him) makes a comment about profilers not going to the restroom til they are all finished.  WTH???  Seriously?  I'm confused, is this a real thing?  Because I don't know if they do things differently in Korea then here in the US, but I have never heard reference to adult diapers on an episode of Law and Order.

Tae Oh is put back into the mental institution for the time being.  Because someone had filmed him while on the airplane, there is little chance of getting away with the murder according to his lawyer.  Tae Oh seems resigned, but his lawyer simply says that it might be time for some extreme measures.  What are these extreme measures that you speak of?  Is it some type of bribery, hiring a fall guy, just mass murdering the whole facility and escaping in the choas?  I have no clue what they are going to do to avoid jail time, but if it gets Tae Oh back out on the streets and being evil then I am all for it.  I will even give the writers some slack on my snarky realism comments if they actual succeed on jump starting the life back into his character.

Did anyone else get kind of an icky feeling when Dr Maria and Moo Yeom kissed?  Was not sexy at all and made me want to gag.  Let's just accept that no romance should ever ever happen between the two female leads and pretty much anyone.  It would be a great tragedy to allow them to produce offspring and pass on their lack of common sense/intelligence to another generation. 

Luckily (since seriously I was about to push the FF button when Moo Yeom spouted the line "I can't stop" in regards to their intimate situation) we are saved from further gag worthy making out moments by the buzzing of Dr Maria's phone.  Tae Oh is having an epic psychotic meltdown (hmmm.  On purpose?) and demanding to speak to her.  

Calming him down and searching for a confession, Dr Maria asks him to start at the beginning, with his hero worship of Gap Dong.  And as our hottie psycho starts speaking we see a figure walking through the reeds, whistling a creepy tune.  And as the camera pans to the persons face we see chief Cha Do Hyeok,  

I KNEW IT.  Ugh I was even going to mention that he was my #1 suspect in my last blog post (even took a screen cap and everything) and then forgot to add it at the last minute.  Now my kdrama sleuthing skills will go undocumented and you will just have to take it on faith, that I totally figured it out several episodes before the big reveal.  

I personally am happy that it was him and not one of the other suspects.  It would be annoying if it was the profiler or the monk since neither actor really has the depth to pull off controlled crazy.  I have watched Jung In Gi act in many dramas, and whether it is a bad guy or a good guy, he always does a superb job.  Now if only we can have some interaction between him and Tae Oh, then I would be one happy kaddict.   Anything to keep the romance between Moo Yeom and Dr Maria would be happily welcome.
