Twenty Again Episode 9 - A Series of Unfortunate "If Only's"

This episode made me think of how it would sometimes be convenient if we could look back in time and see how all our choices are going to turn out.  Kind of a "If only" time capsule of No Ra's life, you could say.

Oh my Ghostess indeed! What an ending we had on episode 10, huh?! Hot and heavy, sweet and steamy, and everything else in between. Ooh la and la!

I Remember You Episode 9 - The Only Thing Scarier Than A Stalker is a Serial Killer Stalking Stalker Victims (say that 5 times fast).

Mask Episode 9 - Just Tell Him Already

Two things needed to happen this episode.  First, Ji Sook needed to stop trusting Seok Hoon and start using her brain.  Second, she needs to tell Min Woo the truth already.  I am not kidding, show; let's get that secret out into the air so it can circulate, much like our plot needs a breath of fresh air to move forward.  JUST TELL HIM.  Sadly, neither happens and we are left twisting to and fro in a never ending circle of Ji Sook stupidity.

Producer ep 9: Are You Denser Than a.... ?!?!?

Before I get started, I need to clearly state, for the record, that while I may have frustrations currently with 'certain' aspects of this drama, that I still love it and all the characters in it. I love when a drama can elicit all sorts of emotions out of me, and that's just what this one is doing. Eliciting. All sorts of blankity-blank-blank emotions.

Pinocchio Episode 9 - Hurdling Towards Tragic Truths

Wow, so much was stuffed into this episode that I don't even know where to begin, or how to separate all my thoughts.  We see so many shifts in the various family dynamics that it is hard to keep straight on who you are supposed to like or dislike.  That inability to paint the characters either black or white is what I love most about this drama (that and Lee Jong Suk who will always be #1). 

My Secret Hotel Episode 9 - So Many Questions. So Much Frustration

This episode was chock full of questions and few answers.  Personally, this blogger is getting a bit frustrated with the character development of the three leads, as well as the romantic story as a whole.  What is going wrong?  Why am I not connecting in like I want to?  To try and answer this question, let's go through this episode and throw out some of the questions I am sure everyone is asking.  I can't be the only one out there cranky at the leads.

DISCLAIMER:
I am having the hardest problem blogging this episode.  Could be lack of sleep.  Could be my anger at Sang Hyo for not being the character I had hoped she would be.  Could be I am distracted by the surprisingly sexy body of Sung Gyeom.  Whatever it is, please forgive my lack of wit in this recap since I seemed to have misplaced it.  To make up for it, I surfed the web (trying to avoid having to watch the episode) and found all kinds of miscommunication cartoons.  Because if there is one thing that this drama excels at, it is miscommunication...........and they are much funnier than I am.  Especially at 2 am.

Question #1 Why Don't we have 60 minutes of Hae Young narrating romance novels to us viewers?  I have to imagine that there are a lot of women who would tune into listen to him talk about heaving bosoms and chiseled jawlines.

I don't know why, Hae Young's voice in the opening scene was swoon worthy.  The longing, the huskiness, so much sexy vocal overload for this poor blogger.  It is almost jarring when the rest of the cast speaks because I want to yell at them to shut up so Hae Young can vocally brood some more.

My favorite melodic vocal moment came when director asked Hae Young why he married Sang Hyo.  He replied (in his oh so very very sexy voice) "The first or the second time?  The first time because we were madly in love.  The second time to win back the woman I am madly in love with."  WOW Swoon moment.  Why can't Hae Young seem to say anything like that when Sang Hyo is actually around.  For the love of Pete, say that and Sang Hyo is bound to fall at Hae Young's feet.  Or more likely she will misunderstand and think he is just saying that to save face, or because he likes to hear himself think, or for a ton of other reasons.  This girls ability to make up problems is legendary.

Question #2 - What Happened in Vegas?

Poor Soo Ah is in her bed crying about her boyfriend's disappearing act (he ran when he realized that he could not keep her while living in poverty).  Soo Ah tries to receive comfort from our cranky leading lady, asking if she thinks that her boyfriend will be back?  "If he comes back I can forgive him, even if it takes a while." (Awww.  Soo Ah is just a tad simple minded, but she can be sweet sometimes as well.)  Rather than console her, Sang Ho bitterly says to dump him, "they never come back.  Move on".  Hmmm  I think I am starting to see what went wrong with your first marriage.  And guess what, it was not him, it was you.

Then we finally get the flashback we were waiting for.  What went wrong in Vegas? Did they have a horrible fight?  Did Miss Buttinski ruin their marriage (that is my running theory)?  In flashback we see that Hae Young leaves her with no words, only a plane ticket in her name: destination New York, and an address.  I guess Sang Ho goes into a her depressed stupid place, since the time lapse indicates she sits on the floor "waiting" for days, until she finally passes out.  Really?  That was the extent of your "great love"?  No phone call, no communication, no anger?  Sigh... I am really starting to get pissed off with the writers for creating situations that just don't make sense.  Seriously?  Who can even relate to that kind of extremity.

Question #3 Why Can't the OTP (one true pairing) be Hae Young and Sung Gyeom?

The one highlight of the episode came about when due to a mix of jealousy on Hae Young's part, the two men ended up spending the night in the same suite.  What followed was the most hilarious and immature show of male posturing that I have ever seen.  When Sung Gyeom picks a bed, Hae Young scoots onto the bed forcing the director to end up on his lap.  Hahaha My expression was probably similar to our 2nd leads.  Who does that?  This was also the scene that I mentioned earlier where Hae Young waxes poetic about his love for Sang Ho.

But the true magic happens as we watch Sung Gyeom brood, staring into the mirror, while in the shower....phhttt  Don't get me wrong, the guy has some amazing eye candy from the neck down, but who stares at themselves in a mirror while showering?  What hotel provides creepy mirrors in the showers?  That is one step away from having rotating heart shaped beds and mirrors on the ceilings.  But I digress, here we are brooding, showers, lots and lots of exposed skin... and the visuals go on, and on, and on.  

Finally Sung Gyeom goes back into the bedroom and even Hae Young is taken a back.  Hahaha he starts an argument about how Sung Gyeom must never work since he must spend all his time working out at the gym to have that body.  Sung Gyeom just smirks as he lathers lotion into his abs........Ummm you sure are taking your time with that lotion there boy.  I am pretty sure he is enjoying one upping his rival, but it is short lived when Hae Young comes over, looking down his nose at
Sung Gyeom, and calls him short.  HAHAHA These two are hilarious.  Why do they have so much chemistry with each other and so little with our leading lady.

Question #4 - If you got married for the hotel, then doesn't it look bad to break up with the "love of your life" two days after the wedding?

Seriously?  There is a major plot hole here if we are supposed to believe that Sang Ho is ditching her marriage two days after the actual wedding.  Does she think no one is going to check up on their marriage (especially with Miss Buttinski in the mix)? 

Does our dim heroine think that dating and kissing Sung Gyeom is the way to prove that she has a real marriage with Hae Young?  It is going to come across as a marketing ploy which will be horrible for the hotels reputation.  What about the three month divorce curse that was the whole point of starting the publicized wedding?  If she gets divorced now, how does that continue to help the hotel?  I am willing to accept the insanity of a forced remarriage pushing our OTP back together. But what is the point when it only ends up pushing them farther apart.  When we have Sang Ho making out with Sung Gyeom as a cliffhanger then obviously we have a problem with the writers selling me on our OTP. 

My Thoughts:
The writers are dropping the ball on character development this week.  I need to believe that this could somehow be real people dealing with these problems, but instead I get a lot of situations that came across as false.  Why wouldn't Sung Gyeom be more upset with Sang Ho's selfish actions?  If my girlfriend married someone else and went away on a honeymoon, I would be a tad bit pissed. Also why would Sang Ho ditch the marriage ruse when it was saving her career.  Why would you sit alone in an apartment and not TALK with your husband about why he has to go to New York.  So many things were just stupid and frustrating to me today.  I know that the writers are somehow going to turn things around, but while they take their time in doing so, I am losing patience and interest.  Crossing my fingers that things pick up next week.  Until then I will at least go back and enjoy the brooding shower/mirror scene since that was sexy and funny all at the same time.

The Joseon Gunman Episode 9 & 10 - Suffering and Secrets.

This week we played more of  the "I know who you are, and I know that you know I know" game.  We of course still got some misleading tricks thrown in to create doubt, since Yoon Kang is toying with his prey, but for the most part the secret is out.  I feel that we have been going in circles the last few episodes, but at least we get to watch Lee Joon Gi do his trademarked, I just outwitted you, smirk which is always a pleasure.  But what I am really waiting for is seeing Yoon Kang enter into the political arena which was the real killer of his father.  We are slowly (very very slowly) getting there, but I am starting to get impatient for the payoff. 

The big bad conservative faction is laying low as the fallout from the death of one of their members is felt.  Merchant Choi is reprimanded for moving his gunman without direct permission from the creepy Noble Ahjussi.  He is told that he is nothing but a "hunting dog" who follows commands and does not think for himself.  Merchant Choi is obviously pissed off but backs off, although I notice that he doesn't mention his concerns about Yoon Kang's identity.  Obviously this "hunting dog" has ideas of his own that do not include being under the Noble Ahjussi's thumb forever.  We also learn that not only was Hye Won a former slave (until this week I was under the impression that maybe she was an adoptive daughter of some sort, or a illegitimate child), but her father also was a slave until he was raised up by creepy ahjussi to become his hidden mercenary.  A lot of the threat against them, and the reason he is following the conservative party's orders, is due to the fact that he could be dragged down (along with his daughter) back to the rank of a slave.  It is an interesting dynamic which makes the whole situation much more interesting.  Not to mention the writers have really done a good job of not making me detest the Choi's.  They are boxed in by outside forces, just like Yoon Kang.  It is tragic that Merchant Choi was the actual killer of Yoon Kang's father, or else I would be thrilled to see these two team up and kick some creepy nobleman's butt.

Soo In finally was able to really shine this week.  All I can say is "THANK GOODNESS!" and "It is about time."  I was really starting to worry that they were going to keep her in the cute true love bubble that held her personality in check.  The added depth and strength to Soo In's character is greatly appreciated.  

 Being the daughter of a politician and the true love of a traitor can really suck sometimes.  Especially if different factions want to use your identity to further their political agenda.  Just as Soo In finally confirms Yoon Kang's identity, she is arrested for the production of gunpowder which was used in last weeks murder.  Realizing that Yoon Kang must be the gunman, Soo In refuses to say anything in order to protect him.  It probably would not have gone very far but Kim Byung-Je (hmmm need to think of a nickname for him.  He is usually the creepy nobleman ahjussi in Sageuks, but has been supplanted by an even more annoying creepy voiced character.  Maybe Political Ahjussi?) finds out that she is the daughter of his political rival and decides that this is the leverage he needed to destroy him.  He actually takes great pleasure in torturing her (Kudos on the director for once actually making it look like the girl was being tortured.  Usually I have noticed that directors tend to sprinkle some pink kool-aid on the white dress, make the girls grunt a bit, and it ends up having them look more constipated than in pain) and arrests her father on grounds of a conspiracy against the opposing political party.  Then takes turn torturing them in front of each other until they "confess" to their supposed crimes. 

If Soo in had not already figured out Yoon Kang's identity, I think that his reaction to her incarceration would have been a huge giveaway.  To say he loses it is an understatement, as he fights policeman, officials, and pretty much anyone he can, trying to take responsibility for the gunpowder.  To put it in perspective you have to realize that Yoon Kang is pretending to be a Japanese citizen (a country that is only grudgingly accepted in a commerce only capacity).  If Yoon Kang, as Hanjo, was found guilty of a crime he would immediately be sentenced to death.  Yet he was willing to chance that outcome to save Soo In from suffering on his behalf.  Unfortunately for our wannabe hero, political ahjussi was determined to use Soo In as leverage so his claims of guilt were immediately ignored.  It is only due to the actions of Kim Ho-Kyung (our vanilla second leading male) stepping up and going toe to toe with his father, that Yoon Kang is able to save Soo In and her father.

I find it fascinating how the writers return again and again to the theme of children (our 4 leads) being shaped and molded by their father's actions.  Whether it is for the best, like in the case of Yoon Kang and his father, or in rebellion like Ho Kyung and Political Ahjussi, all of the younger cast are moved through the fated lines that were created before they were old enough to choose their own destinies.   There is no better way of showing this than between Ho Kyung and his father.  Not only are they on opposite sides of the ideological debate, but morally neither is able to understand the other.  Political Ahjussi sees nothing wrong in framing Soo In's father (and Soo In is thrown in as collateral damage) and looks at the world through jaded eyes.  Ho Kyung on the other hand is young and filled with ideals of the new era and refuses to compromise those ideals.  When he finds out that his father is framing Soo In and his mentor, he goes over his father's head and informs the king.  When the king finds out what is going on, and that there is a witness (Yoon Kang) who provided an alibi for Soo In, he reigns down kingly hellfire on Political Ahjussi.  Not only does the king openly berates him, but he frees Soo In and her father, and orders Political Ahjussi to be imprisoned for falsely trying to get rid of his political rivals.  This was obviously not what Ho Kyung had in mind and he is obviously upset to see his father's fall from power.  It will be interesting to see if Ho Kyung continues on his path, or if filial duty will eventually chip away at his will. 

With the conclusion of this episode we finally see all the pieces begin to come together for Yoon Kang's move towards justice for his father.  He is now tentatively on the radar of not only the king, but of the political bad guys.  He also will have a new goal of keeping Soo In's father safe from the same factions that killed his own father which will provide some forward movement plot wise.  And while we still have no open confession between our two lovebirds, it is pretty obvious that each of them realizes that the secret is out of the bag and is just being kept silent because of some idea that by not saying anything out loud they will be protecting the other.  It will be interesting how long this vow of silence will last.  If i had to make a prediction, I would guess that it is not going to be long since we are due some uber romantic gazing at the least and more then likely Soo In will not be able to resist in helping Yoon Kang with his quest of vengeance.

Random Thoughts:
Is anyone else amused that the conservatives enforce their anti-gun and anti-army stand point by a secret militia of gunman.  A little bit of a hypocritical moment there. 

I am really starting to enjoy Yoon Kang's cooky maid.  The girl has a thing for the bad boys and accidentally getting to the bottom of the households secrets (even if she is not aware she came across them).

King of High School Episode 9 - Sugar Coated Twitterpation

Out of all the hundreds of dramas that I have watched in the last few years, none have achieved the level of cute skinship that this drama has.  Every hand hold, longing look, back hug, and kiss are squee worthy.  And when you consider how few moments most OTP's touch in a drama, it is almost overwhelming the amount  of touching we are receiving.   TvN is even pushing its past limits when you consider this is not only a noona romance, but a high school noona romance, which are pretty racy for Korean TV.  I think that it would be a lot more borderline "ick" if the leading man was not Seo In Guk.  Somehow he makes the viewer feel comfortable with his being physical with Soo Young and gives a sense of maturity to the relationship all the while keeping the youthful "first love" moments intact.  It truly is a work of art between the director, Seo In Guk, and the writers.

I enjoy how the type of romance between our OTP (one true pairing), instead of the traditional kdrama  romance (the type where they date for weeks before even kissing or holding hands in public) we get the super sweet reality that is "first love".  The type that is cute and innocent yet mixed with hormones and constant touching (get your mind out of the gutters people, I am talking about kisses and hand holding).    The type of dating where you literally want to spend every second of the day together because you are twitterpated to the nth degree.  To say that Min Seok and Soo Young are cute as a couple would be an understatement.  They are so sugary sweet that they could compete with a whole candy shop and still win in the sugar contest.  

Even though we are overwhelmed with the cute couple moments, we still get some foreshadowing of the trials that are yet to come.  Evil daddy president is still pondering his passing by of Min Seok's adopted father.  Obviously president knows him from the past and is rattled.  It makes me wonder if there is a bigger conspiracy going on involving the tragic death of Min Seok's parents (OK I know that there is a bigger plot going on since it was in the synopsis.  However all the cute moments in the first 9 episodes have kept it buried in the back of my thoughts.  I guess it is almost time to unleash the revenge/angst part of the drama).  Also is our cold older hyung going to be making a visit to the drama?  I am interested to see if they actually make him his own character or just have him show up at the end like in "You're Beautiful"?  Add to the evil daddy drama, the whole snooping Jin Woo scenes, and my guess is that our happy and carefree moments are going to be less and less in the coming weeks.

We also get some ominous foreshadowing from The Twitty Duo (Min Seok's BFF's).  They continue to ask the hard questions such as, how are you going to get her to love you and not your super successful genius brother persona?  Also, how far is Min Seok going to go physically with Soo Young, especially with their upcoming day trip coming up?  He just smacks them and tells them to get their head out of the gutter since he is 18 and is not going to do anything to that level with her.  AWWWWW  it is kind of sweet that he is keeping boundaries up since he actually is aware of the age difference problem.  You have to respect that at least he is not going to complicate things further while he is pretending to be his brother (yes I know that he really should not be dating in the first place under a false identity.  But he is Seo In Guk and adorable so I am going to cover my ears and sing LALALALA really loud to drown out the anti-Seok/Young fans out there.  I refuse to acknowledge your existence).

Min Seok's thoughts might be pure and innocent, but Soo Young is looking at their upcoming trip differently.  Having overheard her coworkers talking about their own experiences with men taking them on a day trip and "missing" the return ferry to get some overnight action, she prepares for their first intimate night together.  Sneaking off to buy some new lingerie and spending the night dreaming of "naughty" thoughts (Every time she woke herself up giggling it cracked me up.  But quick thought:  Who wears their glasses to bed like that?  As a fellow glasses wearer, I can confirm that it would be very very uncomfortable.)

Was it just me, or was this just the cutest dating montage ever?  They were so adorable and obviously in love that I just squeed out loud the whole scene.  But throughout the whole date, Soo Young continued to wait for them to "miss" the ferry home and take their relationship to the next level.  When that failed to happen, Soo Young concurred that he must not find her desirable as a women, and gave Min Seok the cold shoulder all the way home.  

I loved how miffed he was about what he had done wrong.  While Soo Young goes off to the restroom he quickly calls The Twitty Duo and they inform him it was because Min Seok probably took the selfies wrong and made Soo Young's face look fat in the photos.  PHTTTTTTT, I love those two twits.  Min Seok finally realizes what he did wrong and reassures Soo Young that his heart was beating so fast all day because of his feelings for her.  That and some serious hugs make Soo Young feel better, but she pushes him away because it is too hot to hug.  Which brings our couple to Min Seok's real home away from home, the ice skating rink.  We get to watch as Soo Young begins to get a glimpse of the real Min Seok (even though she does not know it yet) and our couple continues to fall deeper in love.

Judging from the previews, as well as the foreshadowing from this episode, we can expect some stress to start invading Min Seok's life.  It was only a matter of time til something started going wrong, and with his nemesis coming closer and closer to his secret, I suspect that something is going to involve his fake identity.   I hope that the writers can continue to keep the script interesting and out of deep depression mode since what I love best is the heart and innocence of most of the characters.  But either way, I am interested to see where the drama takes us.

Witch's Romance Episode 9 - The Journey of Love

"Love always takes us somewhere....It can take you to heaven, or to hell"  Dong Ha utters this in his voice-over as he comes to the realization that his love is not returned and he needs to leave Ji Yeon's orbit.  It really stood out to me, especially since this was an episode that was all about various loves and the life changes that are a result of that love.

This song was actually going through my mind as I wrote this blog post so I thought I would share it with you all.  In case you need some musical background as you read:)  I think it perfectly fits what our OTP (One True Pairing) is going through

You Can't Force Love

You can't force love, but Ji Yeon's mother is determined to try. She has decided that Dong Ha is perfect son in law material (it is amazing what an almost completed Dr's degree will do to marriage minded mommas.) and is anxious to make Ji Yeon see reason.  She arrives at her daughter's apartment to make a feast and invite the cutie boys from next door over for some bonding time.  (Can I just say that BFF hottie is just so smarmy and adorable.)  He is also quick on the uptake as he and mom leave the two possible lovebirds alone in an attempt to create sparks.  Unfortunately, it is just a lot of awkward tension floating about and the two eventually separate with nothing resolved. 

A Side Romances Heats Up.

SQUEEEEE  I am loving the Marriage Mommy with the CEO.  They are so adorable and perfect for each other.  It is rare that we get such a cute older generation romance that is separate from the main OTP, so I am going to savor the cuteness of these two and let it warm my heart as I suffer through the angst and melo with everyone else.  .

Noooooooo!  You Made Him Sad:(

I think this is the hell part Dong Ha was talking about, our poor white knight is devastated.  Despite the trials of knowing that she was discussing renewing her relationship with Polar Bear, Dong Ha had stayed outwardly supportive and optimistic that she would return to him. He confessed and was willing to wait for her to work things through her mind.  Unfortunately for him (and for us) she can't see past her ruined relationship and second chance to the better option of Dong Ha.  Ji Yeon takes him to their courtyard spot and breaks the news that she has decided to be with Polar Bear, and that he is not leaving her this time.  She breaks our puppy's heart and now my heart is broken on his behalf.

Unable to Tell if You are Moving Backwards or Forwards

I would like to point out that it is easy for us to yell at Ji Yeon over what to do, and which guy to choose.  But regardless of my personal choice I can understand how she could fall back into a relationship with Shi Hoon who she had not resolved her feelings for. Also keep in mind 16 years of her life had revolved around Shi Hoon that is a hard connection to break. In theory the relationship should be able to pick right up and work.  He loves her, she thinks she loves him, there is nothing stopping them now.  However as I watch Ji Yeon force herself to be with Shi Hoon, minus any real happiness or spark, it makes me want to slap her in the back of the head and yell "get closure already!"

The Fallout

I am trying to be mature and have a more positive post this time around (did you notice, not one snarky polar bear picture) but it is difficult for me to watch Dong Ha fall apart.  Positive thoughts, positive thoughts, breath in and out......  But there is a light at the end of the Polar Bear shaped tunnel.  Dong Ha starts to pull away from Ji Yeon and take himself out of her life, and to say she is not handling it well is an understatement.  First, he turns in his resignation early, which drives her crazy.  Instantly she starts asking why he is leaving, and can't he just stay?  It makes you wonder if she is just totally insensitive or in complete denial over his feelings for her.  If there was any question in her mind over him leaving, it is put to rest when he gets drunk and tells her flat out that he can not have anything to do with her anymore since it is too painful.  She better figure things out really fast, because her white knight is about to fly the coop and she will be left alone in a boring polar bear.

Random Cuteness

If you could not guess who brought the cuteness factor into this episode, then you have not been following my blog posts.  It is Hottie BFF Soo Chu for the win!  He has been the best BFF ever, as he emotionally supports Dong Ha as he goes through rejection hell.  My favorite moment, was when he was discussing whether to start the part timer company back up again.  He comments that of course he is going to be back to work with his bestie.  He will just hire a part timer to take care of the restaurant.  HAHAHA Hiring a part timer so you can be a part timer.  Makes sense hottie BFF.

I really enjoyed the pacing of this episode.  Unlike the last two, which were highly Polar Bear focused, this one turned our attention back to the OTP.  It might have been painful and emotional to watch, but at least I could emotionally connect to what was happening(something which did not happen in episode 8 at all).  I have to admit that I do wish we could skip the whole, he leaves her and that is how she realizes she loves him plot point.  I am pretty sure 95% of all noona romances use this concept, and just once it would be nice to have a surprise.  That said, Dong Ha is a very empathetic character.  When he is sad, I find myself sad.  When he is happy, then I am happy.  If this show continues to write situations that make him sad, I can't be responsible for what comes out in my blog.  So for all of our sakes, let's hope that the angsty parts are coming to an end, because I need some more cute happy moments so I am not forced to hunt down more Polar Bear photos and imagine horrible things happening.
